    Rear Wheel Bearings & RARB

This month's jobs of chioice (!) were a pair of rear wheel bearings, rear drop links and fixing hardware and a trial fit of the FARB on the rear.

Having swapped the struts on Sunday and given the car a test drive , i was happy enough to leave the 24mm ARB on the rear for now and so decided to pull the rear hubs off last night, to drop them off today. As it happened, I managed to pull both hubs off in 45 minutes and stopped the chap from leaving the car park to drop them in his boot - job done!

As absolutely everything has been off the rear of the car and so is so caked in copper grease (I now have to put up with abouse from some of my mates for my excesssive use of the stuff!), the hardest part job was working out where the ABS sensor leads went! Found them sticking out under the rear seat so removed them, leaving some string running down the rear chassis leg so I could replace them! Car is currently striiped of all rear interior, carpet etc. Going to have to go for a play before I rebuild it!

Annoyingly, the rear drop links, like a few other items nowadays, had rocketed in price and cost the same as a pair of rear CV boots, pair of top mounts and a pair of bellows and bump stops . So that lot is next month's jobs , unless I do the front subframe

Took a few pictures of the car for no good reason and also a few pics of the RARB setup. Just looking at the pics, you'd never guess that all the rear subframe, wishbones, bushes, balljoints etc. were less than 6 months old

Clearance issues between the wishbone, drop link and handbrake cable. This is not a problem with the car on the ground:-

            Looks Good Andy.

I like the fact that you recycled your FARB too. thats saves a few quid.

It's not the S2 front one as that's still on there! It's a 24mm item that I got from All Audi off a standard 80. I also have a brand new 25mm item sat in the garage in case I either get bored or get an RS2 FARB although at over £200, that's looking a little unlikely for the moment. Hoping that the replica ones come in a little cheaper.

Have to see how it goes but there's the option of a 23mm item if the 24mm is too stiff, a new one is about £100 delivered so will try to find a 2nd hand one. Too many options!

Andy, just a pointer mate, you might like to tie up your calipers!

I am liking your work though, good attention to detail. Let us all know how the thicker anti roll bar feels...

                  Cheers,

Did quite a lengthy writeup in my ARB post. Will copy it across.

Just a couple of £££s have passed the way of my friendly, not so local parts supplier. Milltek cat back, complete rear subframe, front suspension rebuild, rear wheel bearings, gearbox & diff oil change in the last 6 months . Worth it though as it's like a new car... Well it sort of is I suppose . Still pulls to the left though . Hoping that the front subframe will help with that.

Finally got round to having a play with the rear suspension. Have fitted a 24mm FARB onto the rear .

Swapped the struts from side to side to relocate the DL mounts (still have to swap the ABS sensor cable mount but that's a small job that can wait for now). The FARB is completely bolt-on with no modification required to any parts to make it fit. Front cups and bushes are required and fit without any problems.

Only problem I encountered was that with the wishbones hanging, the DLs touch the wishbone edges, with the car on the ground they are nearly 2" clear so not too worried. To overcome this whilst fitting the ARB, I just jacked up the hub and all fitted well. There is a slight clearance issue between the handbrake cables and the drop links. I'll keep an eye on this and will be looking at re-routing the handbrake cables if I keep this ARB setup, although with the car on th ground there is a lot more clearance so I'll have to see what happens! Adjustable drop links might be worthwhile if you're looking at doing this as they would allow more of a gap when fitting and aren't much more expensive than the standard ones have become.

                        Spec:
                        • Koni dampers
                        • Standard springs
                        • Front 26mm FARB - standard S2
                        • Rear 24mm FARB.
                        • 16" alloys with 225/50R16 Eagle F1s (40PSi from motorway trip yesterday).

                        Road Test:

Bit hard to do a back to back comparisson as I didn't go out for a thrash before doing the job to fix a benchmark in my mind . The car seems to love tighter corners where it would have struggled for front-end grip before. Much improved, used a local small roundabout as a handling test and was very impressed with the change! The handling is more neutral on bigger, sweeping bends and nicely adjustable at the limit of adhesion on big motorway roundabouts etc. without snapping (as you'd expect with standard spring I suppose).

The 24mm item on the rear with the 26mm at the front is not too much, does not make the car undriveable or anything silly like that, TBH I quite like it and would describe it as a worthwhile upgrade for those wanting a scrap-yard mechanic upgrade.

The stiffer and softer options that are available make it a good choice if you're looking for the option of adjusting the handling of the car over a wide range.

If I decide to keep the upgraded ARB, I have new drop links to fit and will get a new set of cups and bushes to suit whichever ARB I go for.

                        Verdict:-

                        not bad for £25!
I think it all got lost in the rest of the thread TBH. Was supprised there wasn't a reaction to it.

Nice - let us know how you plan to line up the subframes before getting any alignment work done... My manuals are all boxed up and can't for the life of me remember the procedure for that but I do know that the subframes and mounts are designed so there is room to move them into the correct position. If you get it wrong then the alignment will never be right.

its crucial to ensure the wishbones are correctly aligned when tightening the subframe.
The official methos iirc just uses a tightening order but is not enough to ensure trueness!
What I did was remove chassis plug from each side underneath and measure from each wishbones tip until the distance was identical on both sides . several of the subframe mount points are floating meaning you can adjust the subrframe a bit when they are loosed off.hth

Yeah... needs to be done in two directions though to ensure subframe is square on... and you are assuming those chassis plugs are equidistant from the centre (which they probably are but I dunno within what tolerance).
