Do suspension springs alter with age????

    Views please

Has anyone replaced their OEM springs with ride improvement ?

Please do not tell me it has improved if you have done the dampers bushes etc at the same time

Alistair, springs are reported to sag with age under the weight of the car. Just like an old ladies breasts really.

(But they don't tuck springs into their knickers)

          Springs

Yep, with age all springs appear to become harsher.

A springs "rate" will remain constant, but it will "sagg"over time. The spring rate will only go up if the spring bocoms coil bound.Ie it comes into contact with another coil.

yeah my old suspension collapsed. coudnt really tell by the balance, but when you looked under the arch there was a bit sticking out that shoudnt (if that makes sence).

210k they lasted for, good going

I change my original OEM springs at 125k for new OEM springs about 2 years ago, although I can't comment on improvements as I also changed to koni's as well.

The big downside for me was that it actually raised the car some 20-25mm and it is only starting to settle now. The old springs must have compressed with age and showed no real sign of wear. I only changed them because everything was coming off and I thought why not.

In hindsight I wouldn't have touched them and maybe with my forthcoming round of drop link, tie rod, wishbone renewals, i'll put the old ones back in.

Incidentally, after changing them someone PM'd me to ask if they could borrow the old springs so they could have a custom set made up to match the compression of the old ones. It never happened.
