    RS2 shocks issues?

Feeling a bit gutted as the S2 has just failed its MOT on both RS2 front shocks "p*ssing" out oil! Gutted because I only had them fitted (new) in March when most of the front suspension was renewed.

As both sides are in the same state and have failed at the same time im wondering about potential warrenty issues.

Anyone else had these sort of problems with RS2 shocks leaking / failing early? Just doesnt seems right that they've lasted so little time and I certainly havnt been hammering the car!

    cheers

Are these standard Boge shocks or proper ones?

did they show you the oil and where it was coming from? Also what colour is the oil? I seem to remember my bilsteins having some oil on them (red i think) and it was a residual amount of transit oil or something.

If they have only been on a short time and they have both failed i'd be onto the phone of the supplier for sure...

Thanks guys. They are Boge shocks iirc, standard RS2 inserts - part no. 8A0 413 503J. Havnt had a chance to look at them properly myself but a quick inspection showed a lot of oil on the ribbed tubing that sheilds the top of the shock and also some on the spring . I'll have to have a proper look to be sure. Couldnt see the colour as such, just black as far as I could tell. Could probably explain why the handling has been pants recently tho, a bit galling after spending a lot of money to tighten the front end up in March!

Bought from a reputable and well known supplier so hopefully there might be something that can get something sorted re a warranty type situation. Sure they will help if they can and hopefully this is a one off unless anyone else has had problems with these shocks.

        cheers

When you first had them fitted did the handling get a lot better than with s2 shocks?

does sound like a fairly critial failure if both sides have gone? Are you sure that the inserts you got are actually the ones you ordered..just wondering if there was a pick/pack error and you have something in there that is not rated for the car weight or something causing them to weep/fail so early.

Personally, i thought the rs2 had bilstein inserts and not the boge that the s2 ran on in stock form.

Not to be stupid here, but surely a leaking shock is going to drip oil southwards onto the strut housing and down towards the hub. If the oil is getting onto the outer surface of the protective bellows and the spring then I'm a bit confused... Is it getting out at such a rate that its getting sprayed out and upwards enough to get there ?

How does it handle at the moment - any/much different that before ?

One thing here, the S2 struts are normally filled with oil to keep the shocks cool during operation. Are they sure it's not just that oil?

Aye - cant remember if the shocks/dampers are just gas filled or whether there is oil inside them also. Jamo could be onto something - maybe the big collar nut at top of the strut (where the shock is retained) has come loose and the oil in the strut casing is leaking out ? That locking collar nut has a torque setting of 'TAF' and it needs a special tool from memory - maybe that wasn't used when the shocks were replaced.

                          Thats my thinking Paul

The shocks were gas filled on my Coupe, the blue boge ones ( don't ask me how I know.......... O.K I went through one with an angle grinder o.k! )

Could be, Arn't they filled between shock and strut with anti freeze? if thats leaking it does look oily.
