    CV Joint Annoyance

With reference to this useful info from Mike which echoes the OFRM pretty well...

I'm having a problem disengaging the outer CV joint from the driveshaft... I've done these before with the old bolt trick and its always been fine, but this doesn't feel like it wants to come off.

    Any suggestions folks ?

Ah ha, check the Abs sensor, mine played up during disassembly and reassembly, (don't ask). It might be fouling the outer grooved ring.

I ended up holding the hub hitting the joint with a large rubber mallet for about half an hour before it came off. It was the first time I had done it so was not really sure what to expect either. No fun at all

Apart from that I can't help....

    Good luck.

    Cheers,

    Steve.

Is prety tight. Iff is the original clip, then you have to use more power. Last time i done this was at LHDKid car. They came off preaty hard with a big bang noise. But nothing else.
      Hope this helps!

P.S. This aplies at the new driveshafts, the old ones had diferent fixing clip accesible between the balls and housing!

Dare say the hammer will come out to play if I get no joy the correct way. Dangit....

Mmmm - trouble is finding a way to lock the driveshaft when its like that. Of course the OFRM says you should remove it, clamp it in a vice and do it there - which is fine - but thats a PITA if you havent't loosened the inner joint bolts already... Which generally needs the use of the brakes and a 2nd pair of legs so as to rotate thy way around the inner joint.

put your wheel bolts in the hub, wedge it with a crowbar or similar to stop the hub turning, can undo the driveshaft bols then,or just give the cv a good whack with a lump hammer...

              There is no hub.......

But I was thinking using a hub on the opposite side so as to fudge some way of locking the front axle so that I can get some decent torque into the old bolt as a means to release the clip.... You can only do that if the hub is missing from the side you are working on otherwise the bolt doesny travel deep enough.

At this one you can use the gearbox. Put in gear, hand brake on and tight the screw untill the clip snaps off.

                  Hi Paul,

You are quite right, the nightmare has come back to me fully now. I managed to get my cv joint at such an angle that it "locked" at a very acute angle. In the process of getting it off with a hammer I destroyed the joint. It shattered and the bearing dropped out. (Big aren't they! )

My advice would be to watch the angle it dangles at and possibly soak it overnight in penetrating oil.

I remember winding the bolt back in with some stupid torque on it and the joint still wouldn't budge. Its times like that you just with you had given it to a garage.

I think a new CV joint at GSF is about £60.

All the best of British to you!

                  Cheers,

                  Steve.

You should always be mindful of the angle of the dangle. Sorry.

Paul, I use an oil filter strap to hold the CV joint still while tightening the centre bolt. It's normally pretty tight. A friend with a hammer can help to persuade it.

Paul for the amount of time it will take you to take off the 6 torque bolts on the gearbox end and get the whole shaft off and stick it in a vice and save loads of time ..As said in previous post just stick in gear and loosen one at a time and rotate and the same until all loose and then pop it off and stick it in vice and it will be a doddle to knock off as you will be able to apply the correct knock pressure at the right point

                            Nice job!!!

Paul , it did the same to me last time when i was taking it off... , the best solution worked for me is , i put the bolt in the head of it and tight it as long as it possible so it get it pushed out from the shaft , but the bolt is not enaugh tall to keep pushing it out , so i used to put a spacer in front of the bolt and keep tighting it untill it pop out from the shaft , and then i found out the CLiP is the reason for it to sieze , cos i see the tooth of the cv joint has make lines on the clip!
