I have both front wheels in the air... Dont think handbrake with the car in gear will help me. I didn't get back to it last night, but thanks for the suggestions folks. I can see a hammer in my future.

I had a similar issue when changing a CV joint on a S4. I removed the driveshaft from the car to get the cv joint off.

You can put the car in gear to prevent the driveshaft turning or hold a socket with breaker bar on the old bolt while undoing the driveshaft bolts. The torque on the inner driveshaft bolts is only about 80 Nm so they're not difficult to undo.

I'll be tackling this tonight... Not sure if my mood will be smooth and steady - take off the driveshaft, place in vice etc - or GTF off with a large hammer. Once the CV boots are done I only have the new hub carriers to refit then torque up all zee bolts.

Just watch you don't end up needing a new CV joint @ £80 like I did!

            Best of luck

            Cheers,

            Steve.

Its gripped. Its sorted. I used an M10 splined socket on a long extension to lock on onto one of the inner CV joint bolts and that allowed me to wind in the big bolt to the outer joint and remove. Must say it took quite a hefty amount of torque and a fair bit of trust that I wasn't damaging anything along the way. Cool.

One side completely rebuilt. T'other side and brake bleeding tonight - in the frozen wastelands of my favourite garage

Hahah - I have done them before - many times, but only ever one at a time so its always been a doddle to pull of the outer joint. Twatting about locking the inner joint is the only way to do it with both wheels in the air unless you take off the driveshaft - which looks to me like an exhaust off job to get to the heatshields off to catch the spider to catch the fly. I dunno why she swallowed a fly......
