You should be ok with it hopefully as i've had stuff done on a FWD before like that, I'd say that something was missing and is what supports the strut inside the wheel turret so is letting it twist so to speak.

ok looks like i need to take the whole strut unit off and see what happening - if the rest of the car is anything to go by, its had a right muppet working on it at some point, so no doubt theres some bits missing or something

out of interest, if i remove the strut completely (and not the wishbone)
, will i need to have the alignment re-done afterwards?

    cheers guys
    Alex

They should not be tilted in any direction like that at all - where is the rubber seal that goes around the cup?

Yeah that is quite a high cap level, it should be lower than that, I'll try and check mine in a moment and see but it does not look right.

right, i stareted having a look at this issue this morning... is it normal for the top mounts / cups to deflect when under full lock? Pretty sure this ain't right

I didn't think that looked normal.. in each off these pics full lock has been applied in the direction of that strut, so passenger side top one and drivers side bottom one.
I've also checked the rack and ball joints - all secure and nipped up tight - so still confused by this clunking sound and pretty sure it is a strut / topmount problem.
I've not had a chance to check if the strut caps are loose, but can anyone tell me if there is an issue with my struts based on the look of the top cups under lock?

also, there pretty sure there shoud not be such a gap between the turret and top cup, expecially since these are new topmounts on last weekend.

    cheers for any help guys

If you havn't had the shocks out then I doubt that it's that anyway. I'd go for drop links, if the boot is split then they will be running dry and I doubt you will feel any play in them as they are loaded by the ARB.
    haha yeah no worries

i did think that, but i really did have a good go at trying to see if there was any play, levering the arb with a breaker bar etc etc and all seemed well.. i'll have a look at the weekend anyway, see if i can't find the culprit

I believe the offender in question is the one I highlighted in the picture below.

Have you touched the shocks? I had a knocking on my 80 avant that turned out to be the cap that screws down onto the top of the strut not being tight enough, allowing the damper to move around inside the strut
Does any one have a clear picture of this or diagram ive got the same noise

yes yes and yes to those!

springs are definately seated properly, was very meticulous about getting that right when i did the top mounts

i'm going to check the BJs and have a crack at tightening the strut caps at the weekend. Feb up of spending every waking bloody hour sorting this car out now, i just want to sell it and start using my CQ
