I think topsparky on here recently had H&R springs with Bilstein dampers fitted to his S4. He got them from the US at a good price too.
I've driven a same-chassis S6 with an H&R / Koni combo and it handled and rode well, but scraped the exhaust far too easily.
I actually find the stock suspension in my S4 pretty firm and controlled - it's just the sheer weight of the thing (and the engine stuck out in front of the axle!) that dull it a bit.
Welcome to the S2 forum by the way - us S4 owners seem to be taking over!

I've got Eibach springs and Bilstein dampers on mine, it's no sports car but for such a big and heavy car it handles suprisingly well whilst still retaining good ride quality.sigpic

Beaware that by fitting lowering springs you cannot get the front camber to within factory specs, this isn't a bad thing as the factory specs are not worth bothering with if you want a lowered S4/S6 to handle properly and reduce understeer.
H&R and either Bilstein or Koni dampers are good enough for a road car but if you want to get to a certain ride height then coilies are the only answer, KW is the only choice for the C4 chassis.
Exhausts will scrape if the hangers are not improved and no car likes speed humps especially the S4/S6 as just behind the wheel their are 2 aluminium brackets on the chassis designed to protect the cats from dings and just after the car has gone over a speed hump these bottom out (on lowered chassis's)
However if the suspension bushes are dead it won't matter what the alignment specs are.Corey

I agree on the camber settings, when I got mine it already had the springs and dampers fitted and the camber was -1.4°, factory spec is around -0.75°. I made some camber plates to bring it back to factory spec and to be honest I think it feels worse
It's not as stable in a straight line and feels slighlt vauge in the corners. If it wasn't such a PIA job I'd take them off again and live with a little tyre wear.

I never said it was a waste of time, infact you need to lower a S4/S6 to get the best from it, just be aware that you need to adjust the exhaust to give maximum clearance.
My own S6 has been on H&R's since I bought it years ago and it has fully laden up into the depths of Scotland and France (and god knows how many trips to the Vets with all the dogd) over many a rough road and never been an issue.
We have built (rebuilt?) many C4 S's and have fitted H&R's to improve handling and looks (who wants an allroad S?) with many happy people. the only downside is the price of the springs.Corey

I've got Bilsteins and Eibachs with 10mm spring seat spacers on the rear to even out the ride height. This setup is awesome in my opinion and I still manage to carry my drums and other band gear in the back without too much issue!!'93 S4 Avant now back on the road complete with new shiny go faster bits.Comment

Hi, it seems that i am in the same situation, i just bought an audi s4, from 1992, and i want to change the suspension. The original suspension is very lowered, and the roads in my country (RO) very poor (-:,and i hit the exhaust few time on the way home. it seems that the previous owner had 19" rims, and now on the care are 15" winters wheels and rims, and the care sit much lower. I want stock height, not lowered, and better than original shocks, more comfort oriented, mainly because of the roads here. i have red other forums and it seems that Koni, or Bilstein are ok, but all the spring i found, were lowered compared to original, any suggestions?Comment

Hi, back again, it seems that i had to answer to my own questions, i have a offer for 4 koni shox, yellow, sport, for 480E, but i could not find, springs, what about koni + OEM springs, a good match ? , from what i understood the koni are adjustable , so i could choose for more comfort if i want..Comment

I have already paid for the koni's, and waiting for them to arrive, but i have another problem. The original springs for the car, are about 700E, or at least, that is the price, that i have received. For me it seems to be expensive, thinking that i paid 3000E for the car. It is strange that a H&R kit (which lower the car about 4cm, and i dont whant that) is about 300$ , why is that big difference?

Where did you get the spacers? Have the same problem with the rear slightly too low. The exhaust does sit low on these cars but it hasn't been a problem. Tow bar however will hit speed ramps if you go over them too fast.
Apart from that little issue the shocks/springs transformed the car, went from being a comfy barge to something you can have a lot of fun with on a twisty road.91CQ20v - Gone to a new home

I had the spacers made by a friend out of aluminium. What shocks do you have and what is the exact diameter? The first pair I had made were 50mm but wouldn't quite fit over the shock without taking the paint off so I had to get a set made 0.5mm bigger. I still have the others somewhere so you're welcome to them if I can find them!'93 S4 Avant now back on the road complete with new shiny go faster bits.Comment
