Changing Rear Wheel Bearing on a 2wd V6

    Hi!

I need to do as the title suggests on my drivers side rear.

Now then,I took the cap off, removed split pin and cage, and there is one ole skooly roller bearing in a race-this contacts with a fixed carrier piece which is going to have to come out.I get this without any hassle.

What bothers me is that theres 2 bearings in the pack,is this an axle set OR that theres 2 roller bearings on each side-:an outer which you can see right away and an inner which you cant?

    Thx!!

There should be a taper bearing on either side of the hub, so two bearings in the pack is correct.

one complete wheel bearing has two sets of bearings in it. To properly remove it, you can either push it on from the inside out on a press OR you can put something on the back (inside) of the wheel bearing and use a threaded long bolt with a nut to slowly pull it out.

I just used the later method and the tool I used looks something like this

here's a website i just found that explains exactly what I did today. Except this is on a VR6. This was actually very easy.

They usually come out with the hub in a vice and the outer race being belted with a chisel from the back. Only takes a few blows to do it.

Alternatively, run a bead of weld around the outer race for about an inch. Chuck cold water on it and it should come out easily as the weld contracts and slightly shrinks the outer race.

Using a press is nice but not a luxury that I have.
