My powersteering doesn´t work at low rpm´s! but only when motor is warm. After coldstarting the pwoersteering is always working fine, and when driving it also feels fine. No leaks, and no strange noises.
If it works at low engine rpm when cold and not when hot I would suggest that it might be linked to the temp change in the fluid.
Unless the Power steering fluid is older than God's dog, for me that points towards the innards of the pump passing slightly with thinner fluid. Noticable at low speed, not noticable at high speed.....
That is a guess based on nothing more than instinct though....
I have been experiencing the same issue recently... minimal PAS steering assistance at low rpm. ie turning wheel when stationary is really hard work. Anyone any idea what could the the issue? Nothing looks out of place and will check the belt is tight tomorrow...
The story for me was that around 300 km later the pump started leaking like hell, it went really fast so that after further 100 km the reservoir would empty in just 10 - 15 km, I didn´t fancy the idea of searching used ones at the scrapyard and turned the car over to a good garage in Stockholm that fitted a ZF replacement pump for a total of 7000 sek / ~650 €.
Audi fitted a larger pulley to the S2 pump to ensure that it's not destroyed by 7000+ RPM. The consequence of this is that output at low RPM is reduced. Add to this a reduction in output due to old age and being warm means a lack of enough pressure at idle to drive the steering rack.
I suggest you live with it and whatever you do don't be tempted to over tighten the drive belt. If the belt is genually loose, you'll hear it screach at cold idle.
