odd isn't it what different people prefer in set-ups.
After trying both directions on different cars i'd say using stiffer ARBs and softer springs is a much better compromise for a road & track machine.... this is also how Lotus set their road cars up, and we all know their reputation.

Stiffer springs are all well and good on track, but on the road they can be a nightmare, especially in this country with our 3rd world road surfaces
Uprated ARBs are the single buggest improvement you can make to the majority of road cars IMHO

its all about balance when it comes to suspention, i couldnt tell you if uprated arbs or uprated springs are better, but i can tell you that if you do both to a lesser extent it will be much better, also as far as avant fronts all arount compared to H&R, correct me if i'm wrong but H&R have changed the packange to be fronts all round for the coupe haven't they?....so understeer/oversteer is irrelevant, its the ratio between front and rear spring rates that will effect this, so if the ratio is the same, they will have the same effect on under/oversteer, as long as the spring rates arent hugely different, then arb effect vs spring stiffness will change the ratio. IMO. so all it really comes down to is ride height and stiffness. and on your 7a i assume it will be the same handling characteristics as mine (standard arbs and same spring rates all round) and that is well bananced, almost no understeer and just a very slight oversteer at the limit......just dont let off round a corner lol!!!
then when you drop in your turbo you can uprate thearbs

Has anyone put avant springs on a coupe before btw?

i've got S2 springs and struts and stock CQ ARBs at the moment... FAR too much understeer for my liking, hence my ARB ideas I robbed from Mr Casey

I dunno how your CQ doesn't understeer Ant! I want your alignment specs!

Still keen to see a coupe with avant H&Rs all round if poss? Anyone got one?

trust me...you dont lol!! got about 1.5 deg camber all round and bout 2-3 deg toe out all round....didnt agree with being lowered so much. i may be around your way in a week or two, i'll stop by and take you for a spin if i do. tbh i think my poor alighnment may have a lot to do with my lack on understeer but still. same springs all round get two thumbs up from me!!
there is still understeer with agressive turn ins and in the wet in mine so i still think anti roll bars are a good choise! but i'll wait till either my new engine, whatever that is, or until whiteline finnally get there kit finnished. cant remember do you have ali sub frame bushes?...theyd be a good buy too! cant wait to get round to fit mine! i can actually feel my subframe moving

nice one, be good to compare against another CQ

My subframe bushes are completely shot - cracked and crumbling, they look like dung filled custard creams

I've got a front subby and some forged wishbones i'm polybushing - going to use Superflex not ally for the subframe mounts to keep some refinement i think, rear one can wait for the time being as i'm after a torsen to stick in my other diff housing

@error404 I can't imagine that a lotus recipe will work on an S2, 1st our weight distribution is not very lotus like and 2nd an exige is not what I would call a good compromise between comfort an sportiness, its quite radical...

s2_ant had fronts all round, not sure where his pics have gone though.

Then Girlracer bought it off him and then sold it pretty soon after.

A few pics ot be found in the threads.

I meant the principals behind what they do, not their car specific setups
I’m sure you know Lotus help design, set-up and calibrate the suspension on a lot of other manufacturers cars – they used to do a lot of work with Toyota for instance and set-up the MR2 and Supra. All I’m suggesting is that stiff springs are not always the best way to combat body roll on a road car, and in my experience uprated ARBs offer far better roll reduction, road holding and control on a road car than stiff springs, which is something i'm sure a lot of poeple will agree with.

cheers andy i'll see if i can;t fid some pics with a bit of hunting

Are the avant fronts not softer? I got shipped a set by mistake and from memory they are the yellow spings where as the coupes used blue springs. There was also the difference in that early coupe kits had different front/rear springs, and the later kits used the same spring for all four corner. Something like 39 vs 90 in the part numbers?

I'm using four the same in my cq, ride height seems fine to me.

                    Mark.

this will quickly turn into a thread where everybody states a million different setups and claims brilliant handling methinks

I'm not so sure that ARB's should be used as a substitute for stiff springs, best handling ususally comes from Lowering, Stiffening, then Tuning with ARB's.
