    Steering servo

Hey everyone, guess this is my first REAL post, so

I have a problem with my steering servo, it makes alot of noise and i've found a leak at the top plug on the servo, the problem is my garage wants 1900€ to replace it, which almost made my 23 year-old heart to stop. A refurbished one costs about 100€, but, and here's the question:

Is it possible to restore it by myself ? Or is it even worth it ?

    cheers for any answers....

Are you on about the steering rack or the pump at the front of the engine?
If its the pump on the engine you can swap that cross head screw on the top cheaply and easily.

If its the rack getting it out is a pita and engine out job depending what engine you've got.

on the engine, and it's the pump, forgot to write that...but it's that one plug that's leaking, and the garage didn't want to change just the plug they wanted to change whole pump...but is that plug pressed in or something?

Right the cross head plug on the front just screws in and can be bought from www.vagparts.com cheap enough (under 5 quid iirc) and is a really easy change, just need a big screw driver or something to undo the old one. just be carefull with the seal (which you need as well from them) that it does not tear.

Audi part number 026 145 541. You get the plug and the rubber seal.

PITA to get it to seal right though, i've replaced mine and it still leaks

i've heard talk of people using copper compression washers to improve the seal that i might investigate....

Another version is to grind the plug down a bit in the bottom end, which gives you less threads which makes it possible to tighten it down harder thus making a better seal.

Not done this myself as I managed to get mine sealed up nicely on the first try.
And now I have jinxed it

The pumps can be noisy. Mine was noisy from 10,000 miles on but the Dealer refused to change it. I changed it at 50,000 miles and the replacement was just as noisy
but it's still going strong at 125,000 miles. Some other posts have suggested changing the belt and getting the right tension can help. My advice: if it's working (once you've fixed the leak) and you can live with noise, leave it. There'll be other things to spend your money on
