    Tightening up the Steering!

Right i have decided i want to get the RS2 bits on my car ASAP after getting the motivation from Sonic's thread. But before i do the steering on my S2 feels a bit vague and it likes to tram line a bit. Its not as responsive as i would like to. I have had new blue top mounts and koni's and H&R Springs fitted so what else should i be looking at fitting to stiffen everything up and make it responsive?

    You could consider,

aluminium bushes for the front sub-frame of the car, others will confirm the pros and cons of fitting these.

I have new standard OEM bushes in mine.

Also anti roll bars would be a good idea, they're on mine and I like them, they do reduce the roll noticeably.

They do tram line quite badly with bigger tyres. If you want the car to feel tight then you'll need to replace all the bushes. Ally and poly bushes are a good idea for harder use, rubber OE stuff for a road car is fine.

arent 034 making now all sorts of in between rubber bushes(besides alloy) that have increased durometer and make the car more precise?
I have used these for my gearbox mounts and it made a big difference.

Having said that,i dont feel that the my rs2 is vague and unresponsive. So either i havent driven a car like a lotus elise,or its ok for my standards.
        I also have blue top mounts,OEM springs,Bilstein shocks,and OEM bushes(recently replaced),rear ARB neuspeed.

I have a set of lower springs to fit and 034 top mounts solid, but im holding on still for these...

Check tie rod ends, check no loose or ovalled bolts/holes on the steering rack bracket. Also, there's a bit of info on the forum somewhere about adjusting the pre-load on the rack but i've never tried this myself.

And get your tracking checked by a proper laser alignment place too If it's out, it'll give you a horrible vague feel.

Thanks for the advice. Ill get the rack looked at and see if anything is loose etc. I had the car alligned just after having the konis fitted so should be fine. What bushes shall i be looking at replacing? How do i know if i have cast or pressed steel wishbones?

solid subframe. no noise at all. solid feel.
poly wishbone a continuationm of above.
roll bars new bushes i used rubber at the front and a whiteline rear.

make sure you do the rear along with the front. a soggy rear end can ruin a newly done front.

car feels tight but compliant over bumps. koni shocks and springs.

good enginme mounts. i got 034 uprated items. gotta stop the engine lurching.

look at the arms. if it looks like a normal arm 2 pieces pressed together then its pressed. cast will be one piece id expect.

the fronts should look like the backs if they are pressed.

You might also want to check the steering rack pre-load - after I fitted a new one it was "tight" ( theyre all like that sir ) until I found that it was adjustable - every little bit helps - does it self centre ??

                          Steve,

have a look at these threads:

As mentioned, replacing all the bushes is a good start, I'd go for poly all around but thats personal preference....new engine and gearbox mounts make a good addition too to stop all that weight slopping around.

To adjust the rack preload, keep dialing in more using small increments (1/8 turn or less at a time) untill the steering doesn't want to self centre, then back it off a bit... should make a noticeable difference if its never been done since new

Im going to get powerflex front and rear wishbone bushes and get them fitted. I was thinking of putting ali bushes on for the subframe, anyone tried the ebay ones or have any thoughts on them?
@Error interesting reading on the threads. Have u managed to get your steering sorted? Hope the rack is fine.

Naa, my rack is shot, but its the least of my worries at the moment TBH

Some people don't like the ali subframe bushes, some swear by them. You pays your money you takes your choice...

... try the preload as a first start anyway - its nomally a free upgrade
