    Hi guys, hub question!

    Hi everyone,

I am a new guy to this forum and have a question about hubs, I have bought a 1989 Coupe, its not an S2 but a 2.2 NA Quattro, which I am planning ato do a V8 conversion on, obviously I will need decent suspension and brakes to go with this so wondered if there is any benefit to sourcing hubs from an S2, does this allow anything more than a wider choice of brake discs to go with different calipers or is there more to it than that?

    Thanks in advance

If your car is a 2.3 20v then the only difference is 5stud vs 4stud. The from struts are also different on an S2 due to the larger diameter shocks.

If your car is a 2.2 10v then i believe there is difference in the hub/wheel bearing size, it would be best to convert to a complete 20v setup IMO.

      Hi Mark,

Thanks for the reply, it is a 2.2, but has the locking rear diff, not sure if this means the drivetrain generally is the same as the 20v?

Not worried about the struts as I will replace them all with proper adjustable suspension anyway.

Apologies for the apparent dumb questions as I am new to Audi's, having spent years modifing Japanese cars and spending time around bikes!

Worthwhile checking out wabthekings v8 conversion and using that as a guide, lots of people on motorgeek doing this as well.

Hubs/driveshafts from a 20v are easy to come by due to people changing to 5 stud.

TBH i'd go 5 stud for the easy off the shelf brake conversions when the time comes - not quite as simple with the 4 stud.... at least thats the main reason i did the swap.

AFAIK the 10v CQs have smaller bearings, different hub and driveshaft splines so the CQ20 ones are an upgrade for you, best to try and find some s2 ones IMHO if you plan to follow the common 996 and A8 brake routes. HTH

Thanks very much guys, like I say I saw a lot of people change to the 5 stud hub and the only reason I can think of is for ease of brake conversion and maybe wheel options.

I am not too fussed about how easy it is to upgrade the brakes as my last project (MR2 Turbo track car) had Celica GT4 WRC brakes and I had to remachine the hubs and fabricate brackets etc to get those on, and even that wasn't too bad, I was worried I was missing something more fundamental!

So I guess even though most people change to 5 stud due to the brake and wheel options its probably worth me changing hubs as the bearings are smaller? This willo also require changing driveshafts as the splines are different, or is it possible to use my current stub axles in the new hubs?

I am beginning to question whether its worth it!

              thanks again chaps

It is worth it if you're going to be upping the torque quite a lot (which you will be)
Audi engineered the 20v cars bigger and stronger for a reason

Its far easier and cheaper to upgrade to S2 hubs than start messing with machining hubs etc, as the common brake upgrades are easy bolt-ons with the right hub / stud pattern anyway, i.e. 5x112.
Yes you'll need to change the driveshafts too, but you'll need CQ20 ones - they are not expensive or hard to come by, and they last forever if kept in good condition.

Thanks again for the reply, one other question is if I bought a suspension kit will it be interchangable with the different hub types? I only ask as I want the car to sit at the right attitude while I sort out arches etc, this is a long term project so will keep an eye out for hubs etc but theres no rush!
