Removing the pulley off a power steering pump

Anyone ever removed the pulley wheel off the power steering pump? Ive read somewhere that the pulley is seized or sweated on – so it might not come off as easy as I hope once the 3 allen head bolts are removed.

    cheers

Undid the 3 bolts and of mine popped.

Hint do it with the belt still attached and under tension. Trying to do it with the belt disconnected is frustrating.

I had mine off to do a seal kit on it. Take the three allen bolts off and use a puller to remove the pulley. Make sure you take a note of how far on the pulley is so you can put it back in the same place.

Nothing fancy there - it does just pull off when those three allen bolts are out. Trick is holding the pulley whilst you loosen or tighten them wee bolts. I researched this a while back and found a nice solution. Stock setup on AAN, but works fine on 3B and ABY - with some potential small print about the auxrad.

thanks guys - most helpful and puts my mind at rest!

Just out of curiosity (as I havnt had a change to compare them properly) anyone know if the pulley wheel off an AAN engined pump is definately different to a 3b / ABY set up? Pump is the same but Im assuming that I will have to change the pulley's - the AAN one looks bigger - hence this post!

            cheers

              Yep different setup IIRC

3B/7A are also different, the ABY has a larger diameter pulley.

Here's a thought then for 3B/7A owners... would an ABY pulley give less power steering assistance by nature of having larger diameter and therefore spins more slowly than a small pulley ?

                    And less brake assist?!

mmmm - i dunno - hydraulics aren't my thing... could be going off half cocked here alright... suspect there might be some sort of pressure regulator within the pump... so that spinning the pulley faster and faster doesn't increase pressure delivered to the system.

I would think you are right. TBH i don`t think the pulley size would be that important, except for clearance and belt length.

Tis curious though why ABY has a different pulley though... No different clearance to 3B engine in that area.

is the bracket for the engine shunt stop thingymbob different? My belt rubs slightly on that on the ABY so I wander if my engine has the wrong mounting or pulley. there is clearance while idle but obviously when its reved it must touch.

Also, does the 3B have power brakes off the back of the steering pump?
