the nuts are only metal plates, about 1cm thick, and they are trapped in a sort of cage. you can lift the cage at one side, remove the plate, put a new plate in... job done. the holes are quite big.
well to be hones, i have never checked on the back, i only had avant/limos, so it doesent matter anyway. The holes are in the inner wheel arch, and rubber caps, and they are probably covered with filler or silicone whatever it is. I had problems with one nut on my ex avant, and fixed everything trought the hole.
you can see some of them here.
Is it me or is there some of driveshaft cover/guard on your car? It's hard to say in the picture but is there something that seperates the front wheel arches from the engine bay and it's like the rubber tie rod guards?
I chose not to choose life: I chose something else. And the reasons? There are no reasons. Who need reasons when you've got quattro?
ask JEFFER about this holes , as in topic... the same holes are in ALL audi smallchassi.... he does make a shortsportq car. and have the chassi to the steelplate.... and he does have some pics underneath the chassi in this forum i think...
the older one of the small chassi does have m10 nut in and from the 1992( 91 maybe) it was m12....
this are all vw passat(quantum, santana) to 1987, and in the audi 80/ 90/s2 to 95...??
I will investigate on the rear of my ABY coupe when I am under it tonight....

I have had a look, on my ABY Coupe, the front M10 mounts "Float" a little, but there is no access to them, and the rears are a just a solid threaded part of the chassis.
Mine came undo easily with no issues and I expect they were original judging by the state of the bushes.

This thread saved my butt today! Thought I was stuck when I tightened one of my bolts to much and it started spinning :/ I was so mad!
Then I read this and found the hole Sküll here mentioned, needed to make it a little bit bigger to get the nut out, but really a piece of cake!
