Clunk on rear of B4 quattro root caused

Took a bit longer to see this one - hidden nicely by years of built up crud and dirt. I assumed it was normal weakpoint of ARB link rod, but no - turned out to be inner bushes on the upper wishbone.

Trying to remember if the ones available from Powerflex now are a good fit on the old cast wishbones or newer pressed ones. Anybody now for sure ?

I haven't found any specific threads on this subject - but I'm sure its come up before.

Powerflex bushes for the rear upper 'A' arms only suit the pressed version...

Search for Powerflex avant, there has been plenty of banter on the forum about them. They only fit the pressed steel versions, currently standard Audi bushings are your only option. It looks possible to modify the bushings as they are too big, i just need to find somebody with a lathe to resize them for me.

Does your motor have the cast versions?

There's a lot of caked on crap... seems like they are cast though only glimpsed if I'm honest - would double check before ordering anything. Mines a very early 1992 so I think thats right.

Thanks for the feedback - I can't recall the banter on everything and this B4 back end is still fairly new to me.

should be pressed, and powerflex makes the pressed ones. but S2avant had cast, and managed to fit them by just shortening them a bit (AFAIR).

Just checked mine - an early MY92 - it is cast upper wishbones here. Wondering if its worth the wait for Powerflex to cook up something suitable or maybe just go for new stock bushes - seems a shame as i need to drop pretty much the whole corner to get the upper arm off and I hate rebuilding things with tired old bushes everywhere... but I hadn't reckoned on a full B4 backend refurb before putting a spanner on the S2. Feckin cars !

The upper arms aint that bad to get off, undo the lower shock bolt, upper arm outer joint, then there is four bolts holding the spring/shock unit to the car. You can leave the rest of the suspension in place. Real fun starts with the lower a-arms and tie rods, they seize like a mofo.

Nice that you have the cast versions, they seem pretty rare. Does it also have cast arms at the front?

Good advice Mark - makes sense to do it that way - and interfere with as little else as possible... Will just renew all bushes with factory on that side.

It has pressed wishbones at the front though - weird innit ?

That is weird, it does seem a bit hit and miss, according to the album upto P chassis (93) had the cast arms at the back, my avant had cast on the front and rear and its an R chassis (94). Of course i cant rule out the possibility that a previous owner changed them.

Far, far away , in a parallel universe (greetings from Canada (there, I fixed the flag!), and my first post, hello to all, how very civilized you are here!), a doppelganger conversation & solution (see links below).

A couple of eerily similar conversations about these same issues:

You will laugh when you see what these bushings are originally really for.
