I get bored and build cars in my head from time to time while driving to work. Sometimes it takes me more than an hour to get to work depending on where i'm working. Needless to say i've got time on my hands. One of the ideas i was building was based on a quattro chassis in a golf much like the S2 golf on this forum. I'd probably would put a stock 12v v6 in the thing just to keep things cheap and simple. This car idea is a whole other story and i will get to the point.
So I was thinking about steering and was considering some type of low mounted steering rack. I debated things for a while and then realized that i possibly could mount the rear hubs from a coupe quattro or a b3 platform audi 90/80 series quattro car on the front hubs. I suspect there would be a good chance one could run a rack with the rear hubs. I suspect oil pan clearance would be a issue.
I'm still working my way to the questions. Which is: Is there any benefits in mounting the rear hub carriers up front in a stock coupe quattro chassis and connecting the two rear tierod ends together on the front of the car? Does this kinda make sense? I don't have any pictures to show anyone right now but could probably work on something if the idea is at all legit?
I know the fronts hub carrriers use 82mm wheel bearings. However 75mm fronts are found on b3 platform cars and would be pretty easy to locate axles to match. Also this would allow the use of A4 rear hubs front and rear. Which would make 5/112 swaps easier here in the states ( not to say there isn't options).
My whole thinking is that if something could be built to clear the subframe and sway bar if used then it would help stiffen up the front steering and suspension by connecting the two front hub carriers at another position besides the upper tie rods mounts?
Am i over thinking this and is there any real benefits from this idea?
I'm not an engineering. Not even close. I'm good at figuring things out these days and good at rationalizing prices and benefits. There are positives to this idea which leads me to this post but I'ven't got a f'n clue if it's at all legitimate thinking.
