    Which wishbones do I have?

    Hi,

I need to replace the bushes in the front wishbones of my S2 Avant 1994 ABY. I gave the Audi dealers my chassis number but they were unable to help. It's just that I desperately need to order the correct parts but I'm nowhere near my car to look underneath.

Its a bit of a lottery as to which you will have, the pressed steel seem to be more common but you really need to check to be sure.

OK. What's the fool-proof way of telling? Are they very obviously different?

Yep, poly bushes are coming out in favour of original ones. I'm one of the older guys who prefers their S2 to be as it came out of the factory.

Next question - where do I buy the bushes from? I was amazed to find that VAGParts has vanished... OMG - where have I been for the past six months? Real life keeps getting in the way.

I'd say go buy them from Audi, you can buy them elsewhere, think Beru makes them but in my experience they dont last very long.

OK - Audi it is. They seem to be about ÂŁ18 each. Should I replace all bolts as well with new ones whilst I'm at it?

Next question - is there a guide online as to how to complete the job?

In theory i think you are supposed to change them each time. Personally i dont unless they are badly corroded.

I'm sure there is a guide somewhere on fitting, proper way is to use a bench press to push them in. I always managed it with a vice and a collection of large sockets

Wishbone bolts should really be renewed every time

Paul @S2central did a post on replacing bushes which may have become a "sticky".

Old or not, and I may be one of the oldest on here, there's no way I'd go back to OE rubber bushes, they just don't last.

Do replace the bolts but be aware that the Audi bolt is "waisted" so it leaves room for play and knocking. I'd strongly recommend replacing using standard diameter M10 bolts.

Lots of posts to sift through on this topic.
