I removed the cross head plug on the PS Pump to replace the O-Ring that had gone to hell. But something dropped off the back of the plug & fell onto the belly pan

. I have been told that a Spring and a small needle like pin are the parts that fell. I removed the belly pan carefully but only found the spring. No pin. I replaced the O-ring, fitted the spring back into the piston then noticed that the back of the plug has a rubber seating part with a small nipple on it to center the spring. I reassembled everything and it works perfectly. What is the purpose of the pin?
This is a Rebuilt pump from ZF. Did they drop the pin and used the new rubber seat instead?
