Leaking Koni

Had a bit of undampend action on the nearside front of the Avant recently so off came the strut for a full investigation.

I was confronted with this




Only been on the car since April 2008 and has covered only 8000 miles.

Now with budgets tight at the moment do you think I can get away replacing just this one as the other side is fine and has done a maximum of 8000 Miles.

I would expect better from Koni

Call Koni, i had a front one go on my GTI fairly quickly. Im the original owner of the kit, but they didnt ask for any verification of this. Was leaking out of the damping nut. They rebuilt it for nothing but shipping to them. Have had no problems since, been like 60k now.

Just to check - is it definately the shock as when I had my koni's for my 3b the instructions said to put a small amount of oil in with the shock when installing.

Thats a good point I did put some oil in it, can't remember what type though and I don't remember it being blue.

I need to take the other side off and compare the 2.

I defiantly have noise coming from the nearside at time and it dose sound like a worn damper.

Yeah its worth checking the fluid is from the shock, koni's are an expensive part if they need to be changed. Good luck and hopefully its just the small amount outside the shock.

Are you sure it's not anti freeze? the instructions on my Koni's said to put a small amount in the leg to prevent corrosion.

It,s defiantly oil.

How does the shock actually feel...damping wise?

Got a spare oem 'as a get you by' if that helps?

I'm going to call koni tomorrow and see if they can help.
I also have contacted Aelred in case I need to buy another if koni won't help.

As for what the damper feels like massive travel before resistance is felt

If koni will repair it I will defo need a spare to keep me going, family transport required and all that

Ill let you know tomorrow.

Yeah, Koni should honer their warranty. A mate set them two shocks that had failed and he got new ones back, he wasn't even the original purchaser.
