Phil, would you be open to rebuilding one and if so what would you likely charge? I have fore/aft shaft play in mine but given the experiences above I wouldnt want to go down that route.

It's about an hour's work - 35 quid plus postage and packing. You supply pump and kit.

I'd like to do another one now because I've got a better camera and I'd like to add step-by-step pictures to that page.

Having an absolute nightmare with steering pumps as well: mine is struggling (a lot), so got a replacement - guaranteed for 24 months according to the box - and the damn thing is visibly leaking immediately on fitting. Obviously it's going back for a very full refund. Another one is on the way, and will hopefully be better... :fingers-crossed-smiley-here:

It would be interesting to know who the refurbishment companies are (it's not like Euro or GSF recondition them for themselves), and the relative success (or failure) rates we are experiencing from each of them.
Shocked, exhausted, hosed, bushed, dumped, chipped, mounted, filtered, gauged, packed, intermittantly wiped and braked. I mean broken. Now, about the car...

Right.......been to staeler, will post up part number whn i get the invoice through (theyre sending me the bits)
what to look out for is that unless your Audi guy knows his stuff (mines does! Cheers Peter!!) the seal kit doesnt list alot of the seal, specially the ones that failed on my ECP one, you have to know where to look from other pump to build the kit. This is to make u buy a pump from them apparently. £658 bejings!!!

Ill let you know how i get on!!!

fasicinating as curlyks2 say that how many of these replacement pump simply leak on first build??? are they being overhauled? cheap seals? wrong seals?? ill take a pic of mines failure before i take it back.

The US quattro list used to have barbecues. Bring meat, beer, your car, a cam belt, water pump and roller.

You only need the locking tool and monster torque wrench for seconds - ten cars lined up having their belts changed while the wives cooked and the kids fetched and carried.

Could do the same for the pump - pick somewhere, all turn up, etc.

                    Summer's coming.

IIRC the pressure under the big caps is ca. 170 bar, so you need to take a bit of care pre-cleaning the cap and seat, oiling the seal, and tightening.

I'm now dimly remembering seeing rebuild instructions with torque settings. I'll have a furtle about.

                          Well, I've posted my write-up.

Next one I do I'll add some more piccies - especially of the piston assembly.

                            The saga continues...

Got the first pump back from the garage. Not only does it leak a bit from the cap/screw with the big "+" in it, there's so much play in the shaft you can wobble it forwards and backwards easily by hand.

I guess you can all imagine how happy I was to then learn that the replacement pump - still sealed in box and bag and alledgedly newly refurbished and reconditioned - also ******* leaks.

I can't see a good reason for cap leaks, unless they didn't oil the O-rings before tightening the caps. Clean, clean again and preoil.

But axial play is another matter - I can't see how it can occur. The shim washer used at the factory to adjust it is HUGE, continuously bathed in oil and not subjected to any bearing force - it would take some mechanism I can't imagine to wear it significantly. Unless they were rebuilding many at once and inadvertently or ignorantly swapped washers - but that would leave them with another pump locked solid. Or they forgot to put it back.
