Koni Sports & Need one of these..

    CQ20v again, sorry

I fitted my front Koni Sports and S2ABY springs today, original shocks (marked vw/audi and boge) were well done. Damping was non-existent, but more worryingly the very top of one had started to flake away with rust. The washer and spring perch on top of that are all in the same condition. I managed to get it all back together but if anybody has a spare spring perch I would love to hear from you

Its part number 12 from the image, ETKA lists two part numbers and it’s a little curious,

    893 412 113, (AAH,NG,ABC)
    857 412 111 B, (3B,ABY)

Anybody know what the difference is? I couldn’t see any difference with the S2 vs. CQ20v springs except there slightly thicker steel. Fitted into the perch perfectly. I guess I’m going to need two perches so I don’t end up with one of each type, why is nothing simple..

Having driven it the car feels great now, sits nice and level through corners and the extra firmness of the springs is quite noticeable, very little brake dive which is nice. Damping and body control are on another level, found myself weaving down back roads 10mph faster without noticing. It also sits about half an inch higher at the front so the wheel fits perfectly into the wheel arch, lost that old and sagging look which is nice

    Mark.

Greg, thanks again for the springs

    Mark,

Can't help you with the upper spring retainer. Just curious, do the S2 springs fit perfectly to the CQ20V struts?

Yes they do, i spent a while looking closely at the two springs and found they are the same dimensions as the original items, the slightly larger thickness of the steel didn’t make any difference at the perches so they fitted right in nice and tight.

Has anybody ever noticed that they go in upside down, i.e the part number stamped on them is upside down in the car. The replacement springs i got were marked in the same way from there previous spring perches so they were also upside down in the car they came out of.

The actual strut has three different part numbers for 7A, 3B, and ABY cars, no idea what the difference is as the springs fitted the lower spring perch the same. I wonder do they have the lower perch in a different position to alter the ride height for S2 models?

Koni also lists different shocks for the S2, the CQ20v has two options, one being for top adjustable which i bought. Nearly all Audi 80's, 90's and coupes all use the same koni shocks up front, and then the S2 and RS2 use a different part number. Therefore something must be different with the S2 shocks/strut, bigger diameter possibly?

Springs is the same story, AC vs Non AC cars are different, then 10v's, 7A, 3B, and ABY all have different part numbers. From what I’ve seen they are interchangeable.

      Mark.

      P.S. Sorry i'm ranting again...

        HI Mark,

Very oddly, the dimensions for the two parts are:
        893 412 113, (AAH,NG,ABC) 120mm x 120mm x 40mm
        857 412 111 B, (3B,ABY) 125mm x 110mm x 40mm

The S2 perch's are supposed to be 5mm wider, its the second dimension of 110mm that is odd... very strange!

        Prices new are:
        893 412 113 £9.19+vat
        857 412 111 B £18.97+vat each.
