  • Need new outer CV joints.. - genuine or replacemnt parts?

My Audi specialist is telling me £190 for outer CV joint or £220 for complete driveshaft with inner and outer CV joints, genuine Audi parts..

He thinks the GSF £79+VAT price is too cheap for outer CV joints..

Obviously the complete driveshaft should last longer as the inner joints may go sometime if I don't replace them.. but I don't know if I can justify £440 over £185 for just the outer joints..

    Any opinions?

The genuine price is for brand new joints, the GSF price will be for exchange versions.

Their may be a genuine exchange version available. There isn't one listed on ETKA but I've seen it on A4/A6's before where they only list brand new units but when you try it with an exchange number (basically an X on the end) they are available.

I'll have a look when I'm at work tomorrow.

Might have some second hand drive shafts at work if they interest you, if not might be able to source new cheaper, I wouldnt worry about inners too much they hardly ever go wrong

I'm leaning towards complete driveshafts as it should be cheaper in labour costs as they should be quicker to replace. If you can get them cheaper than £220 each then I would definately be interested...

You might want to get a quote from a 3rd party parts dealer that sells Löbro. They're OEM and more affordable. The same stuff in different package!!!

Inner joints probably last very very long.

Complete shafts are not really quicker to change as the outer joint comes out just by screwing back the bolt in the joint and using it to draw out the joint. The DS don't have to come out of the car! BTDT

            HI Jason,

You can get exchange CV joints from Audi for £88.26+vat if the dealers say you cannot... I wonder what I fitted to my S2 last weekend ???

I cannot supply them much cheaper, so you might just as well buy them direct from Audi dealer. You need part number 893 498 099LX. This is one outer CV joint complete with circlip, washer, boot, grease, CV bolt, boot clips, every thing you'll need to change the CV except for a lower ball joint pinch nut and bolt which you'll need to ask them for: N 034 7784 is the bolt and N 021 1955 is the nut.

I dont think the Lobro supplied joint from G+S comes with all of the bits needed to fit the CV, so the OE part exchange is best overall value (believe that!! :-) )

If you're going to fit this yourself? then you need a large! hex key to undo the driveshaft bolt (I think its 17mm - didn't look too hard!). The new bolt is done up to 210nm + 90 degrees, blinking tight! Don't forget to undo the old bolt with the wheel still on the ground. Its very easy to change the outer cv yourself, don't go paying to much to get these sorted!!

              @Martyn,

The problem is Jason has an UrS6 not an S2.

I had a look at the joints (4A0 498 099) but they don't have an exchange version.
