    Strut Top Mount Upper Mount

Having purchased some Koni's and springs, I have noticed one small problem !
The fronts did not come with the upper mount that sits on top of the strut top mount.
I have been given a part number 811-412-319 but having just got these from the main dealer they appear to be different

As you can see from the pics the new ones seem to be much shallower and the surrounding plastic ring smaller (old one on the left, new ones on the right)

Can anyone shed any light on this ? Have I been given the wrong part number or will these new ones be ok ?

For what this cost me so far I could have bought an S2

No, I have the ones for the rear (the ones on the left in the pics)
I ordered 2 for the fronts, left and right as I did not have these but as you can see in the pics they are not the same

thats odd, they should not sit that low in the topmount, unless you have not installed the slotted nut in those pics?
All the ones i have ever seen have been deeper and sit proud of the top-mount by several mm.

I have always though that the OEM design was wrong, since the top-mount is essentially free in the turret in the vertical axis, a shallower top cup would lock it down and i'm sure the OE mounts would last longer.

The slotted nut is in place on both struts, but I have noticed that on the older mounts that sit on top of this do seem to lock down more onto the top mount (getting tongue tied by this) !
Also the slotted nut seems to be proud of the top mount by about 1-2mm even when fully screwed down

left pi is rear defo...it will sit tighter as there is more rubber on it.....vw/audi strut tops always have had 5-10mm movement when jacked up

Right I think I'm getting somewhere now
Lets see if Ive got this right !
Top mounts front and back are identical BUT
The mount that sits on top of these is different ie the fronts would be smaller ?
In conclusion I'm worrying about nothing and I have purchased the CORRECT top plate to go on my front struts !

I have a question about the mount. Is the metal peace of the mount same in front and rear? Is the difference only in rubber ring? I would like to use front metal mount using rear rubber ring. Is this even possible?

Check out the picture at the top of this thread, the top plate on the left is for the rear and the one on the right is for the fronts.

That's clear for me, but my question was: is the metal plate (only metal plate - without rubber) same on front and rear.

99% sure the metal bits are exactly the same.

Have been having similar questions like this over the last few days when changing the springs. It does seem strange that the metal cap essentially floats with the 5mm clearance, would it be better with a bigger rubber surround to hold it tight or is it not really a problem?

That's why I'm asking. More rubber = more stiffnes.

                            Cheers!

They have to sit with a gap as they cant over when the suspension is turned, put it on full lock and go have a look. That said I fancy a set of rubbers on the front as long as they deflect enough it should stop rattle.
