Where's all the grease come from?

Was changing back to the summer wheels today - inside of front right is full of grease. At least I think this explains why my brakes started squeaking recently, but has it come out of the wheel bearing?

I've driven the car a couple of hundred miles since the brakes started squeaking with no problem. Obviously I should get it looked at but is it urgent? Be grateful for advice from anyone who has BTDT.

    Cheers,
    Tom

If it's ultra sticky, it's cv grease. Mine went on the S6 as well.

        nice brakes

Looks like the CV boot grease as above. This happened on my coupe and made a right mess and is a PITA to clean off anything(especially your clothes)

Thanks - they work even better when not covered in CV grease!

            cheers,

Thanks for all the responses. One question though - what's the worst case scenario here? It's obviously been chucking out grease for a couple of hundred miles now, and presumably there's not much left in the CV joint itself. I need to drive another couple of hundred miles on it today before I can fix it. Could anything seize? How much is a new CV joint?

                    cheers,
                    Tom

I would have thought you would normally hear the cv joint making a noise if it wasn't happy - usually starts with a clicking sound when the steering is towards full lock.
You should be able to get a new joint from the likes of GSF or Eurocarparts for £40 - £50.

I get this to a lesser degree on the inside of one of my front wheels yet the CV is fairly new and absolutely no signs of grease on the boot at all...

i would take the cv off and clean it out and bung it all back together with new grease etc, unless its clicking (as said above) i cant see you having any issue with it.Done plenty like this before and cant remember one that has failed at a later date

In many cases i would rather have an original used audi cv joint than some of the new cack that gsf and europarts sell(they do sell some good stuff aswell though)
