    MOT and PAS removed

On the rallycar we are considering completely removing the PAS system, the car has been on gravel recently and running it's 6 inch rims, so 'hefting' the steering's not really an issue... Even on dry tarmac it's no worse than any other non-pas car (Mk2 Golf etc)... The plan is to keep the rack, so if we go towards A2 in the future (and 8/9 inch rims) we've got the option of installing an electric PAS pump, but this year's question really, is...

Will a car with PAS disconnected and removed pass it's MOT?

out of interest, how are you removing it Ian - fitting a manual rack?
A power rack without power won't really work very well as you are always working to force the fluid through the rotary valve - very hard work!

you could block the ports and pack some grease in the there.

Or if you want to wait 6 months I might have a rather elegant solution :mischeif:

If power steering is optional fitment on the vehicle but has been disconnected in such a way that there is no adverse effect on the steering, that is not a Reason for Rejection. It may be necessary to verify this by road testing

Not a problem with PAS removed but a manual rack must be fitted- pas racks need fluid in them and are way too heavy without the power assistance.

I have had problems with electric racks (Puntos) as if fitted originally and the warning light shows its a fail immediately, but with no light showing and the pump disabled/broken the steering is a normal non assisted set up- rack is easy to change and much cheaper too!! ( compared to normal pas set up)

My m8 who works at an mot centre has told me in the past pretty much anything can be removed and only get you an advisory. Few eamples being
          cracked windscreen = fail
          No windscreen = advisory
          Broken lights = fail
          No lights = advisory
          Defies logic but true.

I think its because if its not there it cant fail howeverif it is but is faulty it will fail. Makes sense but I wouldnt go removing lights unless you want a "Day time only" MOT!

The plan was to keep the standard PAS rack, we've run it a few times without PAS and it's no heavier than a Mk2 Golf without PAS... Was just wondering about the MOT... Reading Dub's linky (thank you) that pretty much explains it....

              Thanks folk

I have just removed the PAS pump and lines from my 90Q and im planning on keeping the rack full of fluid and putting breathers on the two lines into the rack. It should give a happy medium between full power steering and just having the belt removed and having to push fluid through the valves as stated by somebody else.

Interesting... Keep me informed... That's our plan, basically bin the lot and fit moisture trap breathers onto the lines... Then, in the future, if we move towards tarmac spec rubber we'll retro-fit an electro-hydraulic pump onto the rack.
