    Ghetto Method of Tracking a B4 ?

Can people post their method of lining up the tracking on a B4.

Just done the front wishbones bushes and top mounts on my B4 Cabrio and want to track it a bit for the drive to the wheel alignment garage. It'll be the same for any B4.

Thanks for any suggestions or methods.

Zip tie broom handles onto the wheels, put the steering wheel straight ahead and eyeball them straight in line with the body.

You could measure the distance between the front and rear of the wheels on each axle to get toe.

I eyballed mine good enough to drive it 25 miles to the MOT station. I had too much toe out at the rear at first and it made the car want to change direction all the time, quick tweak at the side of the road and much easier to drive.

To get it somewhere close use a long piece of string.

Get someone to hold it on the rear edge of the rear wheel. Hold the other end towards the front.

As you move the string in towards the front wheel there will be a point where the string touches the front edge of the rear wheel, when this happens the string is virtually straight down the side of the car.

Then by steering full lock to lock count the revolutions and then divide it to centre the steering wheel.
Use something to wedge the steerin wheel from moving once set.

Then adjust your track rod end adjusters to line the front wheels with your string using the same method.

      Repeat for the other side.
Also make sure you do all your adjustments without the car being jacked up as this will alter the geometry again...

I have used this method several times to get it something like before going to 4 wheel alignment. To my surprise it has never been far out on the laser systems.

          very true

I still have the before and after printout if ye would like to see it sometime. I'd safely say you'd be good enough to drive to a tracking station by that method.

I've seen it done with a bar that... Aghhh I can't describe it. I'll make a sketch sometime and add it here.
