    Promounts urgent query

Trying to fit some pro- mounts on the rs2 with bilstein shocks and 15mm lower stock springs and it seems as though there is not enough bolt left to mount the sealing nut on the top.

Also there is quite a bit of play between the alloy sleeve and the shock absorbed nut. Is that normal?

Have you fitted the dampers before with those spring lids?
If not try this, remove the spring and see if the lid below the topmount will sit all the way down on the bolt of the strut.

If not you may have to grind the circular step below the thread on the shock as they are some times to wide for the hole in the top mount.

I had exactly the same prob, i emailed Mance and he explained that there is a large tolerance on the step under the thread no the bilstein dampers so sometimes they come out the factory to wide and need adjusting..

    Good luck.

Here is my reply from Mance back in Jan 09, i was using his CCKs though so the problem was specific to his spring lids but I'm assuming that it could be the same issue for you.

You can see here that the lids didn't slide all the way down on the dampers.

      Bo-

I only have time for a quick response as I'm on my way out the door. The problem you mentioned has happened 3 times previously with Bilsteins but only once previously with a single UrS Bilstein. It seems Bilsteins has an allowable tolerance in the top with regard to diameter. The fix involves dressing that area on the strut with a file. Just file lightly around that area until you have a slight interference fit that allows that diameter to "snick" into the upper spring perch. The previous guys that had the issues reported it was a 3-5 minute job per strut. Then apply a small dab of grease around the filed area and twist the upper alloy perch lightly until it fully seats. My best guess is, going from one person that measured with a digital caliper is only about .1-.15mm or less needs to be removed.

I won't be back until very late tonight. Let me know how it goes and I can get back to you tomorrow.

      Hope this helps,

      Mance

Looks like a bit of work then. My top metal spring cups have an extra washer which makes things even tighter. Also the above solution doesn't address the fact that the alloy sleeve on the Promounts is still a lot wider than the bilstein bolt with a huge amount of play. I don't know how they would work.

Temporarily we used stock green mounts and we can see what can be done in the future

I don't have Pro-mounts but I'm sure there supposed to be a sleeve nut that tightens the assembly down onto the strut and also sleeves the difference in diameter between the spherical bearing bore and the strut thread.

I didn't have any sleeved nuts but then i also don't remember there being that much play in the strut thread.

Shame i don't have any pics handy from my suspension setup. Hopefully someone else has some handy.

that sleeve nut provided was still too wide for the pro mount to actually get rid of all that play..

it would have been nice to have an alloy sleeve, threaded, that would go on the shock absorber bolt and that then snuggly sleeved on the spherical bearing.

as for the length of the shock absorber bolt and nut, my spring caps have an additional metal round plate that sits under the cap and allows for better support of the absorber through the cap. That robs even more length for the nut to be able to bolt on the bolt, and so makes the whole fitment problematic.

Im not sure if it would be wise to fit the spring caps without the extra washer. Also filling the top bit of the shock absorber which is a good 4mm is not a 5 min. job!
