Dom, when you fit them will you let us know if the car is any lower and what the differenc to the hamdling is please?
I don't want to lower my car but was wondering about stiffening it up a bit.
David
I will indeed
Basically I bought a 10v 90Q, as I shall be out in the Alps this winter
It needed some bushes doing and really wanted some dampers as well.
I decided that I wanted Standard Ride height, to cope with the snow, but if I could get some stiffer springs and some decent dampers then I should have a reasonable handling car without the Rollerskate harshness
I have had lowered cars before, Including a very trick Integrale on Full Group-A Tarmac Coilover Bilsteins, full Arbarth Cage and shell strengthening kit as well.
Would out handle pretty much anything, and with 400+Hp did not hang about either, but it was just too much in the end.
The Ideal for Ride and handling rather than outright circuit grip is some nice reasonably soft springs with uprated dampers set close to standard ride height. and ARBs front and rear to control Roll
The S2 I understand to be heavier than the 10vQ saloon, so a set of S2 springs should give me standard ride height, or close, with a bit more stiffness, which is no bad thing as the 90 is very very soft at the moment.
The new Bilsteins should control the springs nicely too.
This is going to run on Standard 14" wheels for winter fitted will tall section Proper snow tyres as well
If you have never driven on proper snow with snow tyres you have no idea how much fun it is .....
Very predictable and a surprising amount of "Grip" when sliding, full on 4 wheel drifts become easy
Last year we had a Golf Syncro on snow tyres, which my GF will be using again this year, and she loved it, but its a Part time on demand 4x4 system and you have to really chuck it about to get it to work.
The Quattro is a much more entertaining option
Especially with the Diff lock speed sensor disabled
I will keep you updated with the "Snow preparations" as they happen
Suspension First, Lamp brackets should arrive next week...... Think 2up 2 down Cibies and Clean white Rallycar look
Dom, where in the Alps are you off to? sat looking out over Heathrow and counting the days until we buzz down to Chamonix for a quiet week away pre-season -maybe even a morning ot two up on a glacier if i am lucky
If anyone wants a set of 3B springs I have a set gathering dust in my garage....offers, pics etc, pm me.
I bet you're off boarding which is something I would love to do.
I have lots of 15" audi Coupe wheels which are lurking which would be ok for snow tyres. let me know if you are interested, 4 bolt pattern. These are now spare as I'm going for 5 stud wheels and hubs...
Ride height is an interesting topic, mine when stock sat lower on the front than the rear. With the ABY S2 springs the rear is slightly lower and the front is slightly higher than stock. End result the car sits perfectly level front to back.
At a guess I would say there about 30% stiffer. Body control is greatly improved, both body roll and brake dive. It seems better balanced too.
I also went on to fit Koni adjustable all round, this did raise the car a few mm's but had a far greater effect on handing than the springs did. Made the car a lot more joined on to the road, and chuckable.
Best way I can describe it is with stock springs/shocks when you turn into a 90 degree bend you get a lot of weight transfer and body roll, followed by understeer. Now it almost wants to turn in and loads both outside tyres evenly up to the point where it all lets go at once. Its gives you much more control and confidence. Used to be like driving a boat!

Hi David,
Yep Boarding for the winter You have to do it its so cool
But learn over here first The falling on yer ****, feels the same wherever you do it, its just a lot cheaper over here
What 15`s have you got ?
Id be very interested in a set, especially if they had tyres with enough Tread to get me down there...... They will be coming straight off for snow tyres anyway ?
What wheels are they ? the speedlines? or the flat ones ? or ???
Let me know what youve got and what you want etc ?
Cheers
Dom
The wheels are the speedlines and I have 3 X 225/50/15" with good tread and one practically unused spare wheel and tyre 205/50/15.
I will look at them in the loft and work out a price.
I used to do a lot of skateboarding in the late 1970's won a place in the national finals for slalom in 1978..... I learnt to ski in Manchester about the same time. I hope it would not be too hard to convert.
Catch you soon. Nice picture but the lights need a set of bull bars to protect them.
