Strut caps availability

I have just been stripping a strut down and the only method of removing the damper retaining cap, involved inflicting it with deep gouges from being held in the vice.
The question is - are these availble from anywhere other than the dealers?
Another question relates to the thread dimensions on the damper itself- what is this? (where it fits into the top mount)

I have a pair of new caps for 52mm struts if that helps?
