    First MOT Failure!!!

    Hi everyone,

It's been a while since I visted the forum, quite a few big changes (all good) have gone on in the last few months.

A result of these changes is that the S2 has been laid up in the garage since December as I now have a company car and I'm also travelling a lot for work plus a new baby means that it's far from the primary focus that it once was.
Anyway, today was the start of 'getting it back on the road' which started with the MOT. In the 6 years of my ownership I have only ever had a few minor advisories...... until today.

As expected my rear calipers are just there to make up the numbers. I did try and 'refresh them' a month ago but they need a total rebuild. Ths is OK as I can do this.

More worryingly is the nearside, rear shock that is leaking and has failed.

If it was my daily driver and I wasn't enduring a daily battel to justify owning a car that only sits in the garage and gets occasionally started then I'd replace both rear shocks with new, even bilsteins or similar if possible.
However, this is project 'shoestring' and as such I need to do this with minimal expense.

Does anyone have a spare rear shock they are willing to sell or can anyone advise if a shock can be refurbished? They are standard as far as I know.

Any help that anyone could provide would be greatly appreciated, I need this car back in my life!

    Thanks very much in advance

    Dan

Dan if you go for standard inserts then I wouldn't think they would cost much. I'm in Redditch not too far from Warwick and planning to chnage to KW coilovers soon so could always help with spanners etc.

Get some dampers off someone who is breaking a car with them in good condition or which have been recently replaced Might get lucky!

There are also a few sets of aftermarket ones that pop up every now and again.

        Not To Panic!!!

Its only a shock absorber/damper. Not a big cost even IF you need a new one. As others have suggested, you can probably find a good used one. R&R probably needs new bolts and nuts (Items 4 and 5 below) between the strut tube and the wheel bearing housing.

Dan, I made a tool to tackle rear caliper builds if you want to borrow it! You need something to compress the spring down while you insert the bottom circlip. Got mine blasted and painted at Redditch, look spot on!
If you want me to do them for you let me know and ill happily help!

            Thanks guys, much appreciated!

Cheers for the offer Will, might take you up on that!

I'll call Quattro Corner and pop round to TPS Coventry to get an idea of the price of a pair of new shocks.

Koni shocks are £176.41 each on europerformance

I've just been under the car and the whole strut is covered in fluid. I'm annoyed I didn't spot it as I was under the car yesterday!

Make sure you replace both rear inserts when you do them otherwise it could make for some unpredictable handling as the otherside will have similar wear too.
