    Audi a6 c4 loose springs??

Ok, ever since I replaced the front dampers on my c4 I have been getting a clunking noise when I lock sharply left or right. After some investigation I discovered that the springs are loose in the strut and can be twisted/turned by hand with the weight of the car on the ground. Surely this shouldn't be? Would the springs not be in compression at all times when the car is on its wheels?

Ive tightened down the top nut on the damper as much as I can and it makes no difference.

If anyone has seen this before or knows what the cause is, it would be much appreciated, Thanks in advance

See macsprings recent thread on the same subject. Turn out the previous owner wasn't too diligent about tightening down the cap that holds the shock in the strut. Clunk drove him a bit mad.

Springs were fine until I changed the dampers, will have to take whole thing apart
