    Bambridge Avant Rear Coilover Kit

Just fitted this kit supplied by Bambridge for converting the Avant rear suspension to coilover.

This is a rough guide to what is required and how I went on.

Once the top mounting bracket is removed remove the rubber coil locater

Then the steel needs to be trimmed straight to allow the top spring perch to be welded into position.

This is the locator bracket finished and can be refitted.

    Here is the components

This kit is designed to be used with bilsteins but may fit other shocks.
Once the shock is removed I cut off the aluminium lower spring perch.

This can then be fitted with the Bambridge lower spring perch

Then you need to remove the top shock bush

Once the bush is out it allows you to slide the threaded adjuster over the shock. This locates onto a small peg and stops the unit from rotating when adjusting the height.

Now this is fitted a stop clamp is fitted to the top of the threaded adjuster this secures it and does not allow any movement.

The standard off the shelf coil over spring can now be fitted they are 2.5" diameter and on this occasion 325lbs springs are being fitted with a free length of 8" tall

Press the top shock bush back on and refit to the car.

The adjustment allows it to go as low as sitting the body on the tyre to above and beyond ride height

A big thanks to Kev it's another top product!!!!

          Shhhh.
That's how I like it. Darn low in the back and full high in the front. Makes it look as if you are at WOT all the time

That is an awesome bit of kit, some very good engeneering there as usual from Bambridge. I can see these selling very well as there's not much for the avants in the uk.

Thought it was your car Vas

The kit is on after a long day at Tonk's today.

As my car was basically the Guinea pig for this project we were bound to face difficulties that will be non existent in future kits to be made.

Worth every sense of attempting it. Height adjustable, off the shelf springs to meet your taste, fairly straight forward to adjust once you get the hang of it.

The fronts are already done before and there is no point to recap. I used 8 inch 250lbs springs and will be changing to 225lbs 9 inch instead as the 8 inch tend to bottom out on harsh ugly roads. The make of springs we used are the faulkner ones

At the rears we used 8 inch 325lbs which had 2 problems.

              1) the height again makes the spring bottom out

              2) the spring tends to curve under tension causing it to touch the sleeve making noise while driving.

Solution for 1: we used a spare set of 9onch 300lbs springs and that gave us lots more travel and no bottoming.

Solution for 2: we temporarily cut he sleeve short to the length that I was going to need, allowing to go from stock to lower heights and the touching area was eliminated.

So the car drives nicely, more planted even though I'm using rs2 spec stiffness.

Brian will be in touch with Kev to modify the lower perch of the sleeve to make it 'hug' the sleeve as the stock spring mount does so that there is no risk of the clip being damaged and the whole assembly travelling down. We had this happen on one side. Also there may be a provision of making the actual sleeve thinner to be able to use a longer length without fear of the spring catching on the sleeve.

All in all a good result to be finalised in January once I head out to Brian once again for the final modifications.

with that though you can only use the original springs and cannot alter rates or use sets to cover front and rear setups. Now by getting off the shelf cheap springs on quantities of 4 you can have any combination you want!

                    Hi Rob,
Is the threaded tube a close fit on the damper tube(looks Like it)

That was the problem we had, on both ends of the sample i had, there was a metal retaining ring that pretuded from the tube, this ment that unless we dismantled the whole thing the threaded tube would not slide onto the damper and be a very close fit

Great to see more custom stuff being made to keep our cars going / upgraded. Nice one Bambridge.

This thread shows how it works for the rear of a B4 Quattro Avant.

Why would Koni rear shock not work with the rear kit ? Assuming they don't.

How much is the rear kit ?

Is there such a clear explanation of how Bambridge's kit works for the front ?

How much is it for the front kit ?

Is there an shock type restrictions for the front strut kit ?

Is anything similar available for urS4/6 both in Europe, and for all of the cars in the USA ?

Sorry for all the questions in the one post. It's just me.

                      Thanks.

On my b8s, I think from s 4 b5 avanti the ring is just a clip you can remove, so you can just groove the body and place the clip where you want.

Well I suppose they can be made work but will require a lot more machining on the koni as the lower perch is welded to the tube, as opposed to an alloy one just resting on a circlip.

The fronts have been produced for some time. They are very straight forward and can be used with any shock.

I will dig out some pictures later....
