Hi I`m trying to build my struts from parts out of a box I`ve bought the foam bump stops and gaiters from Audi costing £90 for the rear but they cant supply the front bilstine foam bump stops so my question is what do the rubber gaiters attached to on the front?
Slight thread highjack, but along the same lines. I've got both front struts off the car and stripped down. I've had them sandblasted, painted them in hammerite and now I'm ready to start rebuilding with the koni shocks.
However, I've been taking my time and now find myself sitting in work, wondering if I'll be able to rebuild from memory. Maybe it will all be obvious when I sit down with the parts in front of me but I don't want to suddenly find I'm stuck.
I would be grateful if somene could give a brief summary of the order in which the parts are added to the strut. One thing I'm particularly struggling to picture is where the shouldered collar fits on the shock.
Sorry if it sounds like a blond question, but trying to anticipate any problems.
Loosely related....does anybody know the thread size of the top of the strut off the top of their head??

That helps a bit. Not sure what 28 is. Is that the shouldered collar?
Can't remember if it would make a difference but I have the QRS solid top mounts.
My guess is that the upper spring mount, 29, sits directly on the shock. Then the shoulder collar is fitted. This shouldered collar partially sits inside the bearing in the topmount. Does that sound familiar to anyone?
Put your spring on next with the spring compressed. Make sure the bottom of the spring is butted up against the lower perch. Now put the top spring perch on - again this should butt up against the end of the spring coil.
Sometimes there is a washer above the top spring perch. Now put the top mount on. This should go all the way down to the shoulder of the insert / top of the bump stop. If not, you'll need to compress the spring some more.
Fit the slotted nut inside the top mount and tighten to 50 Nm (if you can).
Release the spring compressor tension carefully - make sure it doesn't shift round as you undo it
