    Steering clunk

Have noticed in the past couple of day's that when i turn left or right, there is a clunk on both locks. I didn't think about it to much and put it down to top mounts of which i have new ones to install when i change both subframes and all the struts and suspension. This morning while i was reversing i felt the clunk through the clutch pedal so i rocked the steering wheel and clearly felt it through the pedal would i be wrong in thinking it's the top mounts?
    ANY IDEAS GUYS.

Certainly could be top mounts. You can also check that the tie rods and tie rod bracket at the rack end are fitted and torqued correctly

Could be any part of the suspension system. Best thing to do would be to get it up on a ramp at a local tame garage and see what's moving. You can do it on axle stands but it's not as easy to evaluate everything.

Components I can think off off the top of my head are
      • Wishbone bolts and bushes - I had one of these come loose.
      • Lower ball joints and bolts - these wear over time, especially if a heavy handed mechanic has knackered the boot.
      • Subframe bolts and bushes - these can come loose over time if not fitted correctly.
      • Steering arms and ball joints (track rod ends)
      • Strut to hub bolts
      • Steering rack
      • Steering column bearing
      • Top mounts
      • ARB bushes and drop links
      • ...

Have an avant at the mo with a similar symptom. Seems one of the top mounts has collapsed slightly or gone stiff so as the steering is locked round the spring is rotated from the bottom by the strut but the stiff top mount doesn't spin as it should and jumps.
Usually you can hear a boing from the spring. Check everything is tight first.

Boinging spring means it's more than likely been fitted upside down - one end has the helix angle and sits at the top, the other end has no helix angle and so sits flat on the strut. It's subtle, so most miss it. Oddly, the S2 coupe HnRs sit in different orientations front and rear, so even HnR must have missed it

Have you got a manual to get all the torque settings off? You'll need to replace all the nylocks and stretch bolts to do the job properly.

If you got someone to rock the steering wheel back and forth, and have a look at the rack <> tie rods area to see if there is play there.
It might become apparent if you look at the other points Rusty mentioned while some one slowly rocks the steering wheel back and forth.

                    Go on to www.s2-audi.co.uk

                    http://www.s2-audi.co.uk/workshop/rs2/rs2.pdf - the front suspension is the same RS2 / S2 coupe.
