My experience of spax is quite the opposite. I had a mrk2 golf that I fitted with spax. That car had over 200hp and took a serious amount of abuse including many track days and some very hard road use. Im sure byd1380 can confirm that that car was tortured. I used it like this for 6 plus years. I heard many people say konis were better so I got a set of koni adustables for it. Well what a mistake that was. They were somehow crashy but yet too soft so the car felt firm driving slowly but was too soft during fast driving and would bottom out. The springs and bump stops were that same on both dampers.
I had fitted the old spax to another golf and sold it. So I bought another set of spax and fited them back on the golf. I sold the konis to someone else that had been sold the koni are great story.
On my s4 I ended up with konis again as I was told billies were harsh. I found the konis crashy but yet under dampened when pushed. The new front spax has made the car much better to drive and also it doesn't nod its nose over high speed bumps like it did with the konis.
As for billies I dont have much peesonal experience. They arnt adjustable so your stuck with how someone else thinks your car should drive. I really like the easy adjustable spax that can be done on car. The konis needed removal from the car to adjust.
I advised a friend with a c4 2.5 tdi to get billies as the konis were poor. He blew out two front billies in 2 years.
Im not saying spax are the best damper. They arnt. But they arnt expensive. They are adjustable on the car. They seem to handle better than konis ans are no harsher on 2 different cars.
There are plenty of examples of blown konis and even billies on this forum and motorgeek.com. I am sure spax are no less reliable than the rest. Unless you get into proper dampers with remote resiviors then they all are not designed for proper motor sport use.
