    Power Steering Pump Pulley HELP

Does anyone know of a pulley that will fit on the power steering pump that is designed for a 4 tooth belt? It needs to be a 3 bolt mount to the PS Pump.

I have replaced my original v pulley with one of these as it is run off the same belt as the alternator. The problem being it moves back or forward on the 6 groove pulley.

I spent ages measuring and it is so close I can't measure any inaccuracey in trueness of my new PS pump mounting position. I think it is just the stretch of the pulley under hard acceleration/de-acceleration that is causing it to jump back or forward. The reason it was coming off was that it if it moves forward, it gets close to the crossmember - that wouldn't be an issue if I had a proper pulley!

Why cant you go back the the other pulley type??? You still have the place on the crank pulley for the v type belt. Is this a no go, asfar as tensioning the belt is concerned?? The other way would be to buy the proper mounting bracket from an AAN and also that expensive tensioner. Maybe a second hand one would do??

The v belt sits behind the gooved pulley - so the PS pump would have to move back 30mm - and there is not enough room for that.

If I can't find a better pulley it will have to be a tensioner - there are plenty of self/sprung tensioners on cars - I just need to find one that would fit in.

You can see when you rev the car hard and let off the belt is nearly jumping - the loads of the alternator and PS pump must be stretching the belt strangely.

When my engine was being built, before a solution was found to moving my PS pump, strong consideration was given to installing an electrical one. Is this not a possibility? Just a suggestion... hope it helps.

chris - it is soo close to working as it is, I don't want to go to an electric one. If I make custom hoses for the PS pump I might get away with moving it to use it's original pulley - money is a bit tight to even make those hoses.

            Doug,

I am using the same belt and pulley as you, the pulley you have is an AAN wheel, and the belt you have comes from an A4 I think, and you are right in that the AAN pulley is made for a wider belt.

The belt P# is 059260849D, this is the link I mailed you some time back http://www.elcats.ru/audivw/vag5.asp...903-95&cid=249 this shows the different belts and their lengths available. So logically the pulley wheel for the two engines listed against that belt, AKE and AYM, should have what you are looking for (the 4 tooth pulley), but whether or not it fits our PS pumps or not I dont know.

I dont have the same prob as you, cos I am using the self tensioner, and you might still find that the belt will jump off of the 4 tooth pulley with out that tensioner fitted too?

Yes you are right, while your car was on the rollers the other week, myself and Lee (I think) both saw the belt practically leap off of the pulley looking for all the world as if it had a few inches of slack in it, hence the probable need for a tensioner.

Yep, saw that at the RR. Tensioner is probably the best cure.

Martin - I think I am going to go for a look at the scrappy to find a sprung tensioner that I can mount on that belt somewhere - just need daylight to go and have a look at a loads of cars.

Am I right in thinking that the AAN tensioner is a sprung bracket that holds the PS pump? Or is it a tensioner wheel?

Last night was the first time Louise was in the car with it's new found torque - she gave it the thumbs up 6th gear accelerating through 100 at 3500 is awesome

Lets see the state of your build then Martin - are you preparing for doing the mod or is the car off the road while you are doing it?

LOL, havent got anything fitted yet, took the Inlet manifold off, and was going to fit the modded water manifold first and do a trial fit of everything, but one of the M6 water manifold bolts snapped and i didnt have a 90 deg hose to join the water pipes up. Also the dipstick will foul the manifold quite a bit, did think about fitting an ABY one but that looks like a right PITA to do. so it will have to be bent about to make it clear.
So gave up at that point lol
I still have that snapped bolt to get out, its sticking out by about 4mm so will need a nut welding on maybe.

Doug, what about fitting the bottom pulley and alternator pulley from a 3B engine??? That has 3 locations for v groove belts so the alt. on one and the PAS on another.

Why would the belt go slack under decel.???? The pump/alt dont move, hence the tension stays the same. IMHO its an alignment problem, one of the pulleys isnt running in line with the others. MY guess would be on the PAS pulley as thats the only one that has been moved.
