Spring not seated correctly-you would see it, also if its close they seem to self seat with lock to lock.
Sounds like a top mount binding issue.
I take it the bearing in the bottom of the top mount is turning freely? And the top moiunt rotates on the bearing when the bearing/top mount is sat on top of the spring plate?
Top spring plate binding on the bottom of the top mount? Any scrape marks? You could use witness paint if you want to check it.
Also I am sure I have seen some cars with a washer in the spring plate area, and some without
had an annoying spring pinging noise on my a3 recently. i know its a diff car but i checked the top mount all seemed well. in the end out of desperation i stuck new top mounts on which didn't feel any diff. guess what it stopped instantly. Hard to re create the binding with out the weight on the mount.
well they are brand new top mounts that have done 0 miles , there is a tab on the strut that the spring sits against and the same at the cup at the top , when i removed the strut i could see the spring had moved about 1 cm off of the tab , so as the wheels are being turned lock to lock the whole spring moves ever so slightly in the strut
