I can tell you 100% I tried them in both orientations and they fitted better the way up I installed them. With them on the strut in the orientation you suggest as a catch all, the spring did not sit vertically. I don't think it is unreasonable to suspect there is some variation in the H&Rs, considering they were manufactured for many years, the fact that H&R themselves don't even know which way is up, and the fact that I didn't hear a peep out of my apparently incorrectly installed items for over 2 years. The fact that Ray is having issues with the exact same set of springs installed differently suggests that might also have something to do with it, but what do I know?
I still think the main issue here is the inserts concentric ring not being fitted correctly or the strut cap being loose.
