  • Knackered top mounts

What are the tell-tale signs and symptoms?

    How about:
Gap between the limit stop and the strut tower greater than say ~10mm?
"Crashy" over small bumps in the road.

Anything else to look out for?

On these damp mornings you'll hear a "doing" from your front springs when turning from lock to lock at low speeds, ie reversing out of your driveway etc

Only if the spring has been fitted upside down...

Thanks guys, no rattles or creaks to be heard, so they may well be okay. Is there any visual check or test I can do without resorting to removing them from the car? Would it be ennough to remove the limit stops on the strut towers and have a look at the condition of the mount bearing from there?

I fitted some used top mounts about 18 months ago after my promounts disintegrated and they're still fine...

inspection on the car is almost impossible so if in doubt, just replace them.

I had a feeling that would be the case, just wishful thinking on my part I guess.

                Hi Guys

So whats the latest thinking on topmounts then, The ones on my RS2 are toast, fed up changing them but don't want to go too hard as HR coilovers fitted, What are the options, I'm assuming that the mountsavers are NLA

                Cheers Paul

You can do a visual inspection to see if they are totally shot.

Just look at the upper cup, if the bottom of that is above the engine bay sheet metal its well gubbed.

Excessive stick out is hard to decide by, mance stuck a value up I am sure.

You can sometimes look into the mount at an angle and see if it is still a bowl shape inside, or squashed flat.

Looks like I must have been unlucky enough to have bought three coupes in that condition then, who'd a thought it.

If you ask Rusty, upside-down springs are the root of all evil on earth, the cause of 3rd world poverty, war, famine and they killed Jesus

In fairness, it was the cause of an issue I had way back when and isnt something most people know about...
