    Power steering pump knocking/tapping HELP!!

Hi there, I'm new to the forum and have recently bought my first S2 and not really sure if this is a brake or power steering fault so I've posted in both sections.
Firstly my brake warning light is on constantly.
First fault was power steering pump leaking from the x plug on top of the pump. Tried new seals with no luck so I replaced the pump with a new one. Shortly after the new pump started making a loud knocking/tapping noise which stops I you hold it on full lock. I sent the pump back which the manufacturer tested and returned as all ok! So I refitted and got exactly the same problem. The manufacturer then exchanged the pump for another new one. Which was fitted and still has the same issue. Loud knocking/tapping noise coming from the pump. It gets worse when the engine warms up. But again it stops when on full lock. I've cleaned the banjo bolts on the pump and on the bomb but this made no difference.
    Things I've noticed.
•Apart from the knocking/tapping the steering works fine.
•The brake warning light is on constantly.
•If I keep pressing the brake with the engine off the power steering fluid level rises.
•After running the engine and then turning off I can press the brake pedal around 15 times before it gets harder to press.

Many thanks in advance I hope someone can help me as I really am stuck on this now!

I don't think this needed two identical topics.

Maybe not........... Update: My brake light is now off it was the steering fluid cap sensor. But still have this nasty knocking/tapping noise coming from the pump though

My pump sounds like a sewing machine, very annoying but works fine. If yours is new I would just keep on at the suppliers. Where did you get it and how much was it?

It was £170 and I bought from our local motor factors. It's the second new one. They both make the same noise :/

Sounds like a blockage / restriction at the rack to me. When you say it stops on full do you mean when you turn the wheel literally as far as it will go in either direction? Does the pump get hot to touch within a couple of minutes of running?
Have you thoroughly flushed the fluid?

Yeah when I turn the wheel as far as it will go either way the noise stops. So it's seems when the pump is under more load the noise goes and when it's free running :
(Not turning at all) it's at it's loudest.. I think the pump does get hot quickely. I will try it later to confirm.

A video of the noise would be useful

Yes there's a video on the s2forum Facebook page. No help on there so far. I think it's the pump at fault but having fitted another new one and it still doing it makes me think otherwise.

                            power steering

Hi having been a mechanic over 40 years I find I have to reply when you fit the new pump have you bled the system as follows take the weight off the front of the car is.jack it up ,make sure the steering resv.is up to level start the engine and with the car still raised rotate the steering from lock to lock keep doing this for about half a dozen times that should expel any air in the system ,its a common fault people change the pump top the fluid up yet forget to bleed the system .Derek

I have rebuilt a couple of these pumps now, you can replace the seals that's about it, if the pump is worn there not much you can do all mine have remained noisey
