    Calling Mr.Crossfire: ball joint extenders!!

Hello, I saw your posts about the ball joint extenders!
I'm interested in a pair if you still have some?
you can email me directly at: type85 at gmail dot com

"Yes, finally an update. I have had all kinds of trouble lately, which have kept me from working with these, but at last I had a small batch made. The popularity of these have kind of surprised me, but I still have few pairs left. If there is enough interest, I will try to have another batch made also. The price for these is now 65e/each, so 130e/pair + shipping.

These have just been tested last saturday on three different cars without problems. The CNC-machined production units have much closer tolerances than my self-made protos, so there has been no reported turning/twisting issues.

Send me a PM if you are interested."

Sorry, been quite busy lately. I can ask a quote if it is possible to have a new batch for, say 10pcs made this time.

The original thread, which did go a little off-topic in the end, was here:

I begin my ranting at page 4.

The pics for the previous batch items are here:

The quality was really top level and I was really satisfied with those. But the problem is that I am not sure if I can have them made at a reasonable cost anymore. I have asked my friend who helped me to arrange the first batch, if it will be possible to do another batch and what is the price level today.

Of course, if money is not an object I can have those made so that I can sell them out with something like ~300e/pair but I don't think many will be willing to pay that much. Anyway, I will look in to this matter and inform you guys as soon as I get some replys.

Ok, so I got hold of the new batch yesterday.

The quality is again flawless, but there is a thing that got me quite worried.

Last month my friend was driving around in his trackday-modified V8 (D11). The car was equipped with my extenders. It happened so that half of the "fork" from the oe-strut broke off. Luckily, there was no injuries and the damage to the car was quite limited. My friend managed to slow down and pull off the road after he noticed something wrong in the steering. Here's a picture of the situation, the extender allready removed:

The extender itself did not suffer much of a damage, so the limiting point for using these is the strength of the oe-components. The breakage occurred when he was on a ramp to a highway, so not a real heavy-cornering or braking situation. This leads me to thinking that it has propably something to do with fatigue stress. Unfortunately, I do not posess the time, skills & equipment to analyze fatigue stresses.

However, this might be just due the different construction of the strut in V8 & the fact that it is much heavier a car than t89-based models. But anyway, I wanted to share this with you, so you can evaluate yourselves if it is worth to taking this kind of a risk.

It is imperative, that the bolts used in fixing these parts are the correct strength (10.9), always renewed and the torque value is correct (65Nm).

In my car, I do not have had any problems so far. Of course, anything is possible.

If you are still interested, the price is the same as earlier, 130e/pair + shipping. Contact by pm.

I will not take any responsibility of anything that happens or does not happen, nor do I offer any refunds of the products.

That failure could also be due to prying the gap between the faces open slightly to facilitate removal of the ball joint from the taper. The bentley manual specifically warns not to do this as it can cause failure like so. I would not have thought it could be caused by the extenders themselves.

Yes, of course there are several possibilities. And being old part, no one can know what has happened to that strut in the past.

The fact is though, that those extenders _will_ put more stress to the hub carrier/strut lower bj mounting point.
