    pas pump

for the last week there has been a buzzy/clicky noise coming from the front of the engine ,i have tracked it down to the pas pump .
the power steering belt is very tight and there is (what him indoors is calling end float) movement in the pulley .
what I would like to know is will a seal repair kit solve this problem or is it likely to be a more serious problem that requires a new pump.
Can the pump be reconditioned and any recommendations and is the pump likely to fail leaving me stranded and angry

Lots of these pumps have end float. And a lot seem to be noisy. They can be reconned.

I had exactly the same problem with my pas pump. Contacted ZF who gave me detailed diagrams of the pump. New pump was at least £280 so I decided to stip it down myself. Endfloat was approx 0.8mm. There are two thrust washers inside, each 1mm thick. I replaced one with a washer 1.5mm thick. Problem solved, no more noisy pump. I even got away without replacing any seals, well, for now.

The belt is not supposed to be tight on the P/S pump as it WILL destroy the bearings, there should be some play in it as the pump never generates alot of load on the belt, pour some water on the belt to see if the noise goes away temporarily while the engine is running.

Mine was a lot quieter just for replacing the belt with a new one.

Audi retail is 395+VAT, and there are a chioce of pumps, depending on chassis number.

there doesnt seem to be many options here, my pump is f**ked and needs replacing

are the audi stealers the only place to get a replacement? as i have been quoted £420+vat for an exchange replacement, which bein honest sucks!

There are a few places to get the pump from. IIRC the price directly from ZF was about 280 for a new pump. A reconditioned one was cheaper. They are an exchange item with about a 50 surcharge.

I'll dig out more information on Monday when I'm back in work.

                    Alistair,

You are the reigning expert on the pas pump. Where did you source the thrust washers? Is it an Audi part?

When I replace mine (again) there's a place in Greenwich, Power Steering Services, someone on here has used theem as said the recons are fine. Even from us, the new PAS pumps are £252.89+vat exchange. Changed my first one as the noise was really loud, I mean REALLY!!

Alistair - that's cool - can you PM or Email me the diagrams and any instructions for changing the thrust washers. I'll pop it on S2 central and we can call it the Alistair-E mod !

Funnily enough I was sorting out my stack of papers relating to the car last night.
The washer was just one a friend had lying around, lucky I guess. The washer was 1.5mm thick to take up part of the 0.8mm endfloat, the original washer being 1mm thick. I believe the existing washers are hardened steel, the replacement wasn't. The washer is running in the fluid all the time and shouldn't really have any real wear end to end. The way I looked at it was that I had nothing to lose, I was looking at a new pump anyway. That's why I didn't even bother with seal kit. If the washer cured the noise, which it did, then I could always replace the seals if they started to leak.
As far as new/recon pumps go, I made quite a few phone calls. These are some of the places I tried

                            KMS 0121 753 3002

KMS quoted me £199 +vat for a new pump, not recon. This did seem too cheap.
I also spoke to ZF pumps who were as helpful as they could be, they do not do any repairs in ths country. The technical man at ZF was Rob McCabe. He put me in touch with someone in sales, can't remember his name, who quoted £240 + vat for a new pump.

Hope this helps. If you want any more info, let me know.
