    Front subframe bushes.

Guys is it possible to replace the frnt subframe bushes in position. Eg cut out rubber ones and replace with poly of solids.??
In attempt to get rid of the slow speed dull knock/rattle I have replaced the top mounts lower ball joints and drop links and lower arm bushes. I cant feel any play on the track control arms/ends.
When I think back after bringing the car down from speed to a standstill I seem to have thrown out my tracking slightly. I beginning to wonder is there's play in the subframe bushes.

Not really, the rubber bushes have a metal "cage" which needs pressing out too before you can fit poly bushes. More than likely you'll need fire too.

Yes they are quite difficult to remove even with the subframe out!

It will be difficult to do it on the car. As above fire is used sometimes but on both occasions when I did it, I cut the rubber with a hacksaw on the top side close to the subframe. Then from the other side use a crappy screwdriver and hammer it into the side of the bush trying to get between the subframe and and bush cage, trying to deform it inwards try to do this twice per bush and you might be able to get the bush out .

Found a pic of what I did. It doesn't look like you can do it while its on the car though.

Hammer and chisel worked well, the metal sleeve holds it very firmly!

Reading the several comment here and methods why not just take it off the car and take it to a friendly garage who has the press to press them out and press the new ones back in.That'what i did a few years ago. Even if you cut and burn them out presumably to save money how are you putting them back in?

Draw them in with big nut/bolt/washer/socket/threaded rod/random crap lying about.

                      Big G clamp.

Ball joint G clamp tool kit

Wheel bearing kit with some sockets

Could possibly juggle it in the vice with somebody holding the subframe.

Mind you someone said they are £48.00 for each bush now at Audi so £200 for all 4 and you have to do the work yourself or pay. Polybush might be the way to go now as cheaper?.......but i have always resisted preferring factory as when these cars were new they were rather special.

I was like you. I am so glad I went poly everywhere. The car retains all its compliance, nvh are unaffected and the car handles sooo much better. Don't put the rubber ones back in.

                          It won't affect originality IMO....

Polybush was about £97 a set of 4 bushes, according to my records from around January time.

                              Steve,

are you absolutely sure compliance and nvh levels are unaffected?? I am rather nervous using them and need reassurance as one man says one thing and another says the opposite.

My goal with my audis is to keep them OE but as improvements come along with better technology as they inevitably do over time i will incorporate. For example if you could find new OE tyres for your S2 from 20 years ago you wouldn't go there as todays tyres are better. At least that's what i believe or at least they keep telling us.

                              Cheers Mark.
