    Steering rack damper.

Since I've owned my B3 20V CQ it's had a knock from the front when at low speeds. I changed the shockers and top mounts when I got the car but this made no difference.
......Anyway, since I've made a start on taking the front subframe and suspension to bits it seems like the knock is due to the damper on the rack, I think it's where it bolts on underneath the battery tray?
Anyone had similar issues, I'm assuming S2's will share the same damper?
Will this be a c0 ck of a thing to sort or an easy fix?

Ok, haven't checked out where it's bolted to yet-can't see much from the top.
Will get a look from underneath tomorrow.

Yeah the bolt under the battery tray is a bitch. Ratchet spanner helps, 13mm

Check the bottom mount on your shocks. My aftermarket springs skipped the little lip
on the bottom that keep the spring in place so when I turn the steering wheel it spins
and skips on the metal plate making the same clunking noise. I also replaced shock mounts,
bearings, shocks only to find that was the actual problem.

What, seen the Error of your ways?

            Hello 404,

I'd often wondered if the damper was there perhaps because the geometry has little trail, and so I read with interest your previous remarks about driving with and without one. That and your other remark IIRC "I want heavier steering" reminded me of the slight increase in steering effort required I enjoy since Pro-mounts installed. What's changed your mind since then:

Or perhaps you where just kidding recently?

            Thanks.

Placebo effect I think. I chucked it a while ago and didn't notice any difference afterwards. Go figure

Oh and steering weight has been sorted the proper OEM way

Interesting, I appreciate your perspective. Proper, meaning via rack pre-load adjustment as detailed in the Bentley, correct?

Knocks could also be Arab drop links or wishbone bushes are toast...

That's what I initially thought 'cause it's that kind of rattle. I replaced the strut inserts, top mounts and ARB links.

often thought this as my 16vq didn't have the damper.
I plan to run on the s2 rack with no damper.

                            whats its general purpose then>?
