    Audi S6

    Hi,

    Need some tech advice please.

I have just had all the shocks and bushes replaced on the S6 Avant, but as this was the fun one I went for H&R springs and as there wasn't any Audi parts available I went with KYB shocks.

Now the car sits and looks great at the front but lifted at the rear and has that 70's hot rod look!

    The rears are KYB 341206.

    Amy suggestions appreciated.

    Cheers

Did the lower rear spring perch get flipped over the wrong way during the install onto the KYB shock by chance?

I will certainly ask the question.

          The springs were H&R 29997-3

                  Hi Varsity,

Some photos to remind us all of your collection would be cool.

Back to the matter in hand, to be honest you look like you're on a sticky wicket.

The H&R kit you've used must be taking the load carrying capacity of the Avant very seriously as it is as we all can see too high. But it should also be borne in mind that you have used KYB shocks which, assuming they are fitted correctly, may not be designed for lowering springs ?

At least the front is right.

The way I see it you've got a few choices, most of which will cost you more money which is alway a pita.

Not necessarily in any particular order.

                  1. KW1 or KW3 through Albert or Yaz.

                  2. Buy a set of H&R 29800 springs (for a saloon, but use them in the Avant).and try them with the KYB shocks.

                  3. If they aren't low enough, buy a set of Bilstein Sports shocks that are suitable for the H&R lowered spring kit. Can't remember whether it is B6 or B8 Bilstein shocks. One is for normal oem ride height, and the second is aftermarket lowered springs.

                  4. You could possible try this on either the KYB or the Bilstein rear shocks, and that is to have a couple of extra grooves machined into the body of the rear shocks. There is a circle on the Blister rear shock that determines the ride height and so extra gloves machined into it will allow the circle to be moved to a different glove allowing the meat spring seat to sit at a different level on the shaft of the shock which will naturally alter the ride height. Having said all of that I don't know if the spring seat is welded into a fixed position on the shaft of the KYB shock.

                  5. The next alternative is if someone was to mill suitably strong alloy spring seats that would allow the ride height to be effectively lowered on the existing circlip level on the Bilstein sports shock. The would allow the spring to sit lower down the shaft of the shock thereby lowering the rear of the car. This custom spring seat may not be economically viable for a group buy, but it would mean that one wouldn't have to have the body of the shock milled on a lathe to 'cut in' the additional grooves referred to above. Perfect for someone to design on a computer and they 'print' on a computer controlled lathe that can cut 3D shapes.

Has anyone tried or does anyone have any experience of 'cutting in' additional grooves on to the body of a pressurised shock absorber ?

An set of Koni shocks on a Mk 1 Golf in the nineties had a number of the grooves on the rear shocks allowing the rear ride height to be 'easily' adjusted.

                  6. Others can add to the list, just to confuse and frustrate you further.

But to be honest you probably know all of the above anyway. and so no real help, but I felt better posting the above rather than reading the post and ignoring your dilemma.

The chat and contributions are what makes the forum as good and as helpful as it is, for all of us.

Looking forward to the photos of your cars anyway.

                  Thanks.

Thanks everyone so far for the ideas.

The car is now at MRC so they can look into the options and will let you know how it goes.

Wish I had gone KW from the start. Are there any specific threads for these?

                    Cheers
