When starting from cold, when the steering wheel is turned at very low speed, a loud "groaning" or rubbing type noise is heard. It lessens when the revs are brought up, but is still there. I have checked steering fluid level and all OK. What could be the problem? When motor is normal running temp, noise is much less but still there.
Anyone have any ideas please?
Does your car have the steering damper? The small gas strut ontop of the steering rack. Our Avant has a noisy damper under the same conditions you mentioned, that groaning rubbing sound when the wheel is turned slowly. I just spray the steel shaft with teflon lube and its quiet for weeks. Just a thought.
I am not sure about strut, I will check. Fluid changed not long back, so probably pump. Is there a repair kit, or do you think I should replace whole pump. Mileage now 273,000, forgot to update!
Thanks
There is a gasket kit available for the pump. Quite easy to change BTDT. There was also a set of pictures from a pump overhaul not a long time ago. By Graham IIRC?
