    How do I fix this?

Noticed gearchange was a bit shabby on the way home today, so decided to take a peek under the gator. I could hear a squeaking-type noise when shifting coming from that area.

Umm, If you have an Avant, then you have a 6-speed box yes?

From what I can tell from the various pictures of the installation procedure, the short-shifter is a bit of a bodge for the 6-speed box. In fact, didn't we have a recent post on here, where the thing fell off or apart, due to the fact that it is only held in place on one side?

I say this because I want a short shifter, but one that is designed to fit the 6-speeder

      Cheers n

take it a parts then glue it back with the black silicone i hope i write the name good , its some kind of adhesive can be like rubber when it dry , center the plastic in the right position where it should be , then glue it all arround with that glue and let it to dry good and it will works fine i did it once in one of my old cars it was the same and it worked fine , or change it with new one it cost arround 60$ by my side.

I'm happy with the standard shift to be honest and don't feel the need for a short shift kit.

Si, yes I do have an an avant. I'm not too keen on the bodge job for the short shift kit either.

What do I ask for in terms of parts then?

Not really as the metal band has broken and some of the plastic tabs on that ring around the top have broken off.

I've run the Billzcat1 short shift kit on my 6 speed Avant for the past 2 years with no problems and no bodge, it's great

.. the only problem is the reverse lockout which I'm sure Martyn@VAGparts fixed (I've just not got round to that mod yet!)... by disassembling the lockout frame on the original and refitting to the replacement bearing .

VAGparts do a short shift kit and I'd be very surprised if there was much of a difference, as it's a OEM bearing (From a Golf, I think?).

The bit that is a bodge is the reverse lockout part. I personally dont like it. It is a pig to get right first time. The kit was designed for the 5 speeder, surely Bilcatz or whatever, could design something for all the 6 speed cars??? After all, doesnt it fit many of the 6 speed cars??

Erm no offence but you don't know what your talking about to be perfectly honest mate.

The shifter that failed snapped and IIRC it was a 5 speed, it was instantly replaced.

The reverse lockout can be done by two methods the one on VAGParts or just taking the lock section and securing that to the main body via 2 self.

great mod and i'm very happy with mine, even the mechanics who have worked on my car have said it makes a hell of a difference.

Short Shift replacement is the way forward for all S2s. Don't know why it wasn't designed like that from the factory.

Am I weird - am I the only one that likes the standard shift on the CGR ?

Must admit I haven't tried a short-shift modded version, so maybe I am missing out... Sure the stock shift is heavy-ish and could use being a little shorter, but I hate really hate very notchy gearboxes. Must try one....
