    Stupid question

    Hi

i have a problem of getting my car to a 4wheel drive dyno the most of our dyno places have 2wheel drive dyno machines is it possible to pick-up the rear of the car or the front and run the car on a 2wheel dyno or disconect the propshaft?????????.

If you disconnect the prop your going to have to get it re alligned when you reattach it. Is it worth it? Also you wont get a true read of the cars power and torque levels.

Just find a 4WD dyno - there is no other way... except data logging with an accurate G-meter and some good software. That will produce power & torque figures at the wheels which can be roughly correlated into flywheel figures.

I've seen rally cars using portable roller trays to warm up transmissions at sprint events, but I wouldn't dare use them at full load on a dyno test.

You can disconnect the prop from the REAR of the transmission and run the front wheels on the dyno - this is perfectly safe, but only works on 016 engined cars ( early type 44 200 quattro, early type 44 100 quattro, Ur quattro 1980 - 1987, all type 85 Coupe quattro). All these cars are non Torsen, and the centre differential must be locked, or no drive is transmitted at all.

Torsen equipped cars can't be run with the propshaft disconnected, or the rear of the car lifted, as the Torsen will overheat if run hard without load applied. I know someone who ran a Torsen on a 2WD dyno with the prop disconnected, Torsen didn't explode, but the car was never the same again...
