    Clutch overcentre spring

Does anyone know if the S2 has two overcentre springs on the clutch pedal. The spring broke when i was driving home the other night and shot off into the footwell. When i ordered the new one and was trying to fit it i noticed that there is another spring already there. The clutch feels no different and still works. I tried asking a specialist and a dealer bit they could not cofirm if there should be two.
As i could not get the new one to fit i just need to know if it is safe to continue driving it.
    Hope someone can help!.

Come on, surely someone out there can tell me if there should be two springs. Other than that, can someone tell me how to get the sodding thing on. I must have spent a couple of ours crammed into the footwell trying to get a spring 3" long onto mounting point only 2" long. Other than taking the whole pedal assembly out, i cannot figure a way to do it.

        Chris,

Assuming it is an ABY then there are two springs. One is the over centre spring the other is the assister spring.

The one nearest the centre console is the assister spring and is marked brown.

The one nearest the door is the over centre spring and is marked red.

I've put the prodedure HERE for you on how to change them.

NB: When greasing do NOT grease the spring only grease the moving surfaces on pedal and pedal bracket.

        HTH,

        Ben

Thanks ever so much for that info, it has really helped.
I just need to clarify which spring is which though. You say that the over centre spring is nearest the door and is marked red and the assister spring is nearest the centre console. However the diagram that you have included is shown the other way round. The one that has gone on mine is the one nearest the door (assister i assume), and the one that is ok which is nearer the centre console and has a red spring (over centre).
Assuming that it is the assister spring, is that all it does, assist with the pressing down of the clutch?. The clutch still feels fine to me and i have just got back from a long drive to the 'TEN OF THE BEST' competition in York and have not had any problems with it.
If only i had had that tool for compressing the spring yesterday i would have been alot happier, instead of trying to use tie wraps!.

Clutch Over Centre Spring Technical Illustration

            BEN
            S2 AVANT

The technical illustration that you have provided for the special tool for the overcenter springs does not appear in the aftermarket Audi Workshop Manual published bty BENTLY.
There for it must have been extracted from an Original Audi Workshop Manual ????.
Can you provide a contact to supply the Original Workshop Manual for the AUDI S2 COUPE.
I would very interested to obtain if at all possible.

            Regards

                Pm

                Gooday

Not being fully briefed on short hand expressions are you telling me that I have a PM
By that do you mean a Period Monthly or is this the latest Intelligent Terminology for Path Map.
If thats all the shorthand thats at the bottom of the TECHNICAL ILLUSTRATION that will open up the vault to all the treasures then the answers is no I have not tried it as yet????.
This is a new learning curve.

                THANKS FOR THE ADVICE
